Profile Information

Are you connected to the tourism/travel/hospitality industries or travel media in any way? If so, please specify how (kindly include any relevant company names/Web sites!).
I'm a magazine writer and have written for lifestyle magazines Jacksonville Today (FL) and Canandaigua Magazine (I'm the head writer and associate editor),as well as Golf Digest and Score (Canada). I also write for the on-line travel magazine SharingTravelExperiences.com. I developed a website for educational travel along the NYS canal system, and I'm a board member of Canal New York and have represented them at travel media events in Toronto and Albany. I'm a member of HARO. I've also hosted travel writers on behalf of Visit Rochester and Canal NY. I'm a member of Visit Rochester and often work on projects as a freelance writer and consultant.

I've been traveling all of my life - grew up flying to Washington DC as a child to visit family, and went on a group tour to Europe as a teen that was so epically bad but ultimately transforming, I've written a novel based on the trip. Living on the PGA Tour, I traveled a great deal of the US as well as trips to Japan and Jamaica. I've been to Greece twice -- the last time for a wedding on Santorini and I would go back in a heartbeat! Love the Aegean.

Took a trip to the Whitefish/Kalispell area of Montana and fell in love with it.

I'm A LOT less boring than this sounds.
On which destinations & travel topics can you advise members especially well?
The Finger Lakes of NYS, the Greater Rochester region, the Erie Canal/NYS canal system (525 navigable miles). As a former PGA Tour wife and writer for Golf Digest, I have a specialty in golf and golf destinations. I'm also captivated by the contemporary Erie Canal -- which is actually 4 connected systems that are one of NYS's greatest hidden treasures for travel from The Great lakes to NYC.and
What destinations are you most interested in learning about?
Greece, Turkey, Italy, Scotland, Jordan, UAE, Norway, Ireland, Canada, Nova Scotia, PEI, Newfoundland

I'll be there, Marci. Looking forward to it.

Just promise me we won't have to sing.

You are indeed friendly and helpful. Even if I now have trouble getting that song outta my head I haven't had to sing since elementary school: I got a mule, her name is Sal...

Anyway, good news about what the eastern end has to offer and also the need for coverage.  What is your web site URL?  I won't be in NYC till later in July, so unfortunately will have to pass on the event this year. But I'll make sure our partner Ed Wetschler tries to get it on his radar.

Thanks for the reply, and I look forward to more back and forth about this great area so we can put together a trip that will make everybody happy!

Hi Marcy!!  Let me add my slightly belated personal welcome to the site.  I'd love to get your input regarding an Erie Canal trip.  I was the winner at the August 2010 NYC media event and have touched base with the Greg Marshall at Visit Rochester about doing the trip in Sept. but haven't yet followed up in detail, partly because I don't really have a good idea of what the segments are like and how it would work.  Can you advise?  I think we'd probably want to concentrate if possible on the eastern half of the the canal.  Hopefully you'll be in the area around that time, maybe we can meet!

Thanks for your note! I'm afraid I'll be back on Nantucket by the 23rd, but please do keep me posted. E-mail is best: sandy@sandymacdonald.com.  Again, thanks!
