Cruising

Cruising can be one of the most value-friendly vacations going. But how the heck do you choose from all the choices out there? Here are some resources (including non-traditional cruising, like freighters) and feedback.

Port Everglades - set in Hollywood, Fort Lauderdale and a bit of Dania Beach - has interesting new signage enabling tourists to get around with greater ease. The new signs readily identify ships by name and where to drop off, etc. Port Everglades is the cruise ship capital of the world with more than 3.4 million passengers expected during 2010 and more homeported cruise ships than any cruise port worldwide. Sixteen cruise lines and 49 cruise ships will sail from the seaport this season.

Marcy, welcome back. Loved your blog on here about Oasis...good job! And want to read more about the Poesia. Personally, I am rather tired of these super-sized ships so am looking forward to cruising on the Royal Clipper in January with our daughter and son-in-law, brother-in-law and wife and sister and her signficant other. Do you think I have that right? Anyway, there are eight of us going...and we are staying two days in Barbados in a condo before we go.

It really is NOT true that every cruise line has a laundry set up somewhere on the ship. Costa and Holland America, for example, do not. Laundry is a revenue item and what more and more ships are doing is to offer a one-day special laundry rate (just got off Costa Atlantica) for a bagful of laundry at a given rate on the second to last day of the itinerary. The Costa package deal was $24.95. The article also assumes every line offer the drinks rate. My suggestion? Check with the line directly or read any of the newer cruise guidebooks to find out if you ship allows you to do laundry. ALL is a really big word in this diverse business..

Hi MJ, Sorry about that! This should be the right link for 6 Tactics for Saving Money on a Cruise -- Not All of Them Are Obvious

Hi Jose,

I think you have the wrong link included. It goes to a list of three "deals" in the Caribbean in January. Would love to read the article you reference.

Interesting news in the Miami Herald re the first new cruise ship order in more than 20 months, deliverable to Carnival in 2012. It looks like we may not even notice the slowdown in the pipeline, since as the piece points out, Carnival's got 13 new ships slated for delivery between this January and spring of 2012.

I just read the post and I'm sure it was a WOW experience. The technology, engineering and craftsmanship seems to be evident throughout.

Don't miss this week's Tripatini blog dispatch from Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas, the world's biggest cruise ship!

On board MSC Poesia as she sails out of Port Everglades on the one-year old ship's first Caribbean cruise. Suzanne Somers is on board with a pack of followers and she looks bold and beautiful - like this ship. Poesia is an amazing ship with its European design and wonderful and soothing hues.

Costa just announced names of two new ships: Favolosa and Fascinosa. They'll join the fleet in 2011 and 2012. Why not just use the name Costa Flavia? I loved that old ship - one of my first Caribbean cruises.
