Maine is #1 in a new survey of the most and least peaceful -- i.e. -- nonviolent states in the U.S.A. The ten most peaceful states are Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Minnesota, North Dakota, Utah, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Iowa and Washington. Maine was ranked first overall because it topped the list of states on three of the five USPI indicators: number of violent crimes, number of police officers and incarceration rate.

The ten least peaceful states (from 50 to 40) are Louisiana, Tennessee, Nevada, Florida, Alabama, Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Maryland.

Regionally, southern states were identified as being the least peaceful, while states in the Northeast were most peaceful. 

These findings, reported by VisionOfHumanity.org, are from the Institute for Economics and Peace. Tying lack of crime (etc.) into monetary terms, the IEP has determined that the total cost of violence per person in a state ranges from $656 in Maine to $2,458 in Louisiana.

Does this mean that the costs of incarceration, police personnel, etc., are built into your charges when you visit a high-crime state?

Whoopie pies should be declared Maine’s official state dessert what do you think. Here at the Atlantic Birches Inn in Old Orchard Beach we think it would be a great ideal before Pennsylvania tries to snap up credit for the tasty cakes. We already have a state berry the wild blue-berry, and a state drink Moxie why not have a state desert the Whoopie Pie.

Whoopie pie folklore has it being created during the Depression, by a woman in Bangor, Maine who was making a cake and she had some leftover batter. Mainers are traditionally known for being frugal and very resourceful, so she plopped the extra batter on a cookie sheet. When these were done baking, she filled them with frosting and shouted, whoopie it worked hence the creation of the Whoopie Pie. Whoopie pies even have their own festivals that are held in Maine. We have found that the best place for Gourmet Whoopee Pies is Cranberry Island Kitchen in Portland.

They offer a wide variety of cake flavors from golden vanilla butter cake, classic chocolate cake or pumpkin cake filled with cream cheese, maple cream cheese orange cream cheese, or espresso cream cheese. The golden and chocolate pies can be purchased with any of the following filling flavors lemon and lime, original, cointreau and fresh orange zest, myers dark rum, freshly brewed espresso, rich chocolate champagne, chambord, peppermint, chocolate chip, espresso chocolate chip or mexican chocolate filling with a hint of cinnamon and a kick of cayenne pepper. why do you mainly put the Acadia region as features? In the Wells, Ogunquit, York, Kennebunk region we have some of the best beaches in Maine. There is also the Rachel Carson preserve, Ladholm farm and KENNEBUNKPORT! we are also within driving distance to the three shopping towns of Kittery, Freeport and Conway, NH. please hear the plea of this Mainah for life...include us in your features.

Can't decide whether to buy the new Maine Huts & Trails season pass or not. Includes stays at the huts + breakfasts and dinners thru 6/30/11. Its not cheap: $379. But maybe I get up there enough to make it worth it. If any of U call them let me know what U think. 877.634.8824.
