Maldives

This atoll of 1,200 isles spread over some 90,000 square kilometers of Indian Ocean is endangered long-term by sea-level rise, but for now is still a spectacular if pricey destination of pristine beaches, nature, and absolutely delicious diving.

Dreaming to visit one of the most beautiful regions in the world, Maldives is one of those holiday destinations. Maldives is the place for attractive beaches, resorts, perfect weather, wonderful surf, superb cuisine, and one of the world's favorite places to visit on a much-needed vacation. http://www.maldives.com.au/maldives/

I think that somewhere in the Caribbean will be much better. I though the point of the Maldives was to go to Spas, relax and have a drink.

True, but tourism is very perception sensitive business. Video footage and news clips are enough to dissuade young honeymooners.

Maldives , if you have knowledge about the issues and realize that the main atoll , where the Gov. and 450K Citizens are living, than you will realize that Male is very easily bypassed. Any anger is not directed against the Tourists as the people depend on the Health of Tourism, There are reasons for what is reported that I will not discuss, There is no reason not to keep Vacationing in the Far spread island Paradise, we are not seeing Terrorism...

This past few weeks, Maldives is undergoing a political turmoil and low simmering protests. The President was deposed and another one has taken over. There were protests that became violent.

I am in India at the moment, and the news reports indicate that domestic tourism has been hit. Maldives is a popular honeymoon destination for a lot of Indians who do not need a visa to visit the country.

Without delving into the political issues involved, it is presumed that high end resorts are bound to have minimal impact, but others may see a decline for a couple of weeks or months.

One week later, and the government has retreated on its vow to shut down spas at high-end resorts. So okay, they're open again, but how much p.r. damage has been done?

The government of the Maldives has shut down spas at high-end resorts because their practices do not conform to sharia. How badly will this hit Maldives tourism?

A resort is being planned for the Maldive that's for blonds only -- no joke! Read about it.
