There are many stepwells in India. They used to be built as reservoirs to conserve the water for the village, especially in Rajasthan which has a very dry desert climate. This is the largest stepwell. It is 13 stories high and with no railings, you better not be afraid of heights.
It is one of the architectural wonders of the Rajput era. This photo does not even do it justice.

Wow!!! What is this "stepwell?" What's it's purpose? I've never seen anything like it!
