Typically people will be prepared to spend more on organic foods, organic clothes, artisan foods, hand made craft work yet it would appear that this trend does not apply to environmentally friendly hotels and restaurants. We are finding that what a lot of people want is merely a cheap room, but one that has all the comforts and amenities of a more pricy room. Because we are partially solar powered it is expected that the room rate should be lower because our energy cost is reduced. But what about the cost of the investment in solar power? We are curious to find out other hoteliers' experiences. Our hotel is one of the most environmentally friendly in the world and many of our guests choose us because of this, yet there are still many who say we are too expensive. Our thought is that one is not paying just for a room, but for an experience, for the whole ambiance of the property, the service and so on and also by supporting us one is supporting the wider community, our staff who are paid much more than the government stipulated minimum wage and for whom we also pay health insurance, local farmers and fisher-folk, local guides, community projects and the whole concept of sustainable tourism. This certainly cannot be achieved with a $50 per night rate.
Take an oatmeal bath:

Add two cups of oatmeal to the bottom of a nylon sock. Tie up the sock, and let warm water pour over the pouch. Leave pouch in tub as you bathe.

Another Sunburn Healing Bath:
Fill a handkerchief tied with string or a muslin teabag with the following:

1/4 cup rolled oats
1/8 cup whole milk powder
1 teaspoon tea leaves, green or black
3 drops lavender essential oil
2 drops peppermint essential oil

Run a tepid to cool bath and soak along with this bath bag. Use it as a compress to spread healing, cooling relief all over.

Apply yoghurt to burnt skin and leave on for about 20 minutes to soothe the pain.

Drink plenty of water and peppermint tea to keep your body cool and hydrated.

What also works well but might hurt a bit when you apply it to the sunburn is lemon juice. Squeeze a lemon and add some water to it. This form of lemon juice works as a disinfectant that soothes the pain and promotes healing of the skin.

Natural After Suntan oil : To make your skin healthy again after a sunburn and to protect it from further damage, try applying a combination of the following oils, which is very effective to keep your skin moist and supple. Use equal amounts of all the ingredients, shake well and store in a cool place.

Apricot Kernel Oil is nutrient rich and nourishes the skin in depth without leaving an oily feeling. It contains essential fatty acids as well as Vitamins A, B and E.

Carrot Seed Oil has many properties and is particularly rich in vitamin A and help to keep the skin firm.

Jojoba Oil has a composition very close to the sebum of the skin. It is an excellent external moisturizer, helps prevent dryness, and rejuvenates the skin through new cell growth.

Mobile Phone

Make sure you arrange for your phone to roam before you leave. While this service is very useful it is costly. You can purchase a phone in Jamaica for as little as US$ 30 with lots of free minutes on it to use while here and donate it to someone before you leave. You can also simply purchase a local SIM card for use while you are here.

You can also simply purchase a local SIM card for use while you are here.

Mosquitoes – How to Avoid Unwanted Friends

Beyond splatting these irksome unwanted new holiday friends, we suggest bringing the following Essential Oils with you; unlike DEET they do NOT cause brain damage! Citronella, Lavender, Soya oil, Catnip, NEEM Seed Oil There are now DEET free armbands available too so look out for these locally. When in Jamaica ask for extra garlic when you can – as long as it’s fresh mosquitoes can’t stand the stuff! Follow guidelines at hotel to keep them at bay – provided in your welcome information folder.

Prescription Drugs

Consider bringing a spare prescription for any essential medication such as for high blood pressure etc so that if you run out or even forget your medication it is possible to go to a pharmacy and get some. Keep these with you with a spare copy of your prescription in your hand luggage.

Shebian School

If you have any children’s books that your kids have grown out of bring them along and we’ll pass them on to the school where they are grateful for any assistance they can get: exercise books, pens and pencils, teaching aids, games, etc. If you would like to donate anything please bring it along and we’ll get it to the school. If you are interested we can also arrange for you to visit the school.

Shoes

Shoes are always difficult: heavy and bulky. Try to wear your heaviest/bulkiest pair on the plane. I try to limit myself to 3 pairs: a pair comfortable for walking extended distances, a pair of sandals or flip flops and a dresser pair for evening! We recommend bringing a pair of Water or Reef Shoes or Sandals, they are perfect for excursions when walking amongst waterfalls and snorkelling in the small number of coves around Port Antonio that do have Sea Urchins. Bring along a good pair of walking shoes or sturdy walking sandals for your hikes and comfy sandals or slippers for beach and pool.

Clothes

We advise rather than picking out a few things in your wardrobe, to think outfits –beyond the beach there are plenty of occasions when you will need more than a swimsuit including dinner at Mille Fleurs.
We advise rather than picking out a few things in your wardrobe, to think outfits –beyond the beach there are plenty of occasions when you will need more than a swimsuit including dinner at Mille Fleurs. For a 2-week holiday think of those occasions and prepare 4 outfits around them. Try to choose cotton and linen where possible which are comfortable and quick drying and allow the skin to breathe, in humid conditions jeans do end up feeling like you are wearing a weight as well as socks that will "wick" (draw moisture away from the skin).

Make clothing items do double duty, men's shorts can double as swimming trunks, a woman's tankini top can be an evening top. A shirt can layer over a dress in place of a jacket.

A Kagool is useful to carry around in the case of a storm blowing up. A loose jacket is perfect for the evening, you will not need a cardigan or jumper unless you’re spending time in the mountains in the winter.

Amongst your outfits do try and include a convertible pair of trousers with zips, so that you can shorten or lengthen them depending on where you are visiting and according to the temperature. An elasticised -waist is slightly more comfortable to wear in humid weather than having buttons cut in. Trousers with zips are perfect to hold all those precious essentials and are lighter than carrying around a big bag.

On your flight to Jamaica we suggest one change of outfit in your hand luggage, or the minimum of 1 large t-shirt, a change of underwear and any essential medication, spare glasses that you take and hang on to that airline toothbrush as it could come in handy – and one or two books in case of delays. Every airport has its fair share of left luggage disasters, and it’s better to proactively plan for the worst so that the first couple days of your holiday won’t be ruined having to run round clothes shops or pharmacies buying essentials to see you through. Since you are coming to a beach location and the hotel has a pool you might want to include your swimsuit as well. Bring two swimsuits so you'll always have a dry one

Flashlight

A small Maglite is always handy. Jamaica often experiences power cuts and it can be quite comforting to have one of these close by in your room or if you are out and about before local establishment generators kick in.

First Aid kit

It is useful to have some simple home remedies with you in case you feel off colour –for example some packets of electrolytes when you might have too much sun – although fresh Coconut water or “Jelly Water” as it is known here works wonders too as a natural treatment with similar qualities as electrolytes. We do have various herbal teas that help with upset tummies such as ginger, camomile or fennel so please do not hesitate to ask us and we will be happy to help with these but you can get some simple remedies for yourselves and have on hand at all times – please consult your doctor – we have listed some simple ones as suggestions:

Tiger Balm – wonderful for any itchy bites

Nux Vomica 6x pills (miraculous for acute tummy troubles and some flues and often a lot of other things)

Arnica cream or tincture for use only on unbroken skin for battering and bruising

Arnica pills – works miraculous wonders if the event of any physical trauma such as twisted ankles etc.

Hypericum perforatum for all squeezed nerves - fingers in car doors and falling on your tail bone or knocking the daylights out of your funny bone and squeezed back disks and shingles

Also

bandaids

fever, pain relievers and cold medicine, etc.

allergy kit, if needed

Motion sickness preventative if inclined

Mild laxatives

Diarrhea medication

Glasses

If you need glasses to see make sure you have a back up: an old pair, contacts or prescription sunglasses.

Guidebooks

Bring one along as it does contain lots of good information, but remember things do change and some of the information may be outdated. Check the facts at the hotel before you head out.

Hats

Our advice is to bring a classic Tilly Hat. It floats, it has its own built in pockets and made in multiple sizes so you can be sure of a good fit, and on the occasional windy day its handy ties won’t leave you hatless and exposed to the strong rays of the sun.

Looking at the satellite imagery it looks like there isn't a ray of sunshine anywhere in the Caribbean. The good part is that we are harvesting lots and lots of rainwater and all our tanks are filling up which makes us feel really good. The water is treated with two filters and ultra violet light and the drinking water is treated further with reverse osmosis. The water is so soft and tastes wonderful with no nasty chlorine taste. The coffee machine loves it as well as there is no scale to mess it up.Several Travel Tips for Jamaicatag:frugalnomads.ning.com,2011-06-07:3169359:BlogPost:2183732011-06-07T12:42:34.000ZHotel Mocking Bird Hillhttps://frugalnomads.ning.com/profile/BarbaraWalker

After Sun Gel

Don’t forget your ‘After Sun’! Aloe Vera Gel works well in the tropics, it is non greasy and won’t block your pores allowing you skin the chance to breathe and cool down after a day out in the sun. We don’t have fresh Aloe Vera growing so bringing a gel will make up for this and you will find it is normally cheaper at home that in Jamaica.

Baby Wipes

These are great as a quick freshen up when having a day out at the beach or hiking in the Blue Mountains when the heat & humidity begin to take their toll. They are also good for dealing with heat rash.

Beach Towels

We’ll provide beach towels at Mocking Bird Hill and it will save you packing this bulky item, but bring one along if you’re travelling to other places. Make sure it’s big enough to ensure that unwelcome sand doesn’t get in to all those nooks and crannies. A beach mat is a good idea to put under your towel at the beach or in our gardens.

A super absorbent microfibre towel that wicks away moisture and dries in half the time of a cotton towel is also useful.

After years of operating one of the most environmentally friendly hotels in Jamaica we this year will be starting another project in the hope that we can reach out to as many small properties as possible and assist them in converting their operations. We feel that using our combined knowledge and expertise will be able to put other businesses on the path to sustainability and more cost effective management. We will go beyond 'just consulting' and after the initial consultation and assessment we will move on to staff training, management training and begin the change to environmentally friendly operations. We will also assist in seeking funding to allow properties to install environmentally friendly technologies. We are in the initial phase, nevertheless we have attached our brochure for information.
Surfing in Jamaica at Boston Beach Near Port Antoniotag:frugalnomads.ning.com,2011-05-28:3169359:BlogPost:2079732011-05-28T20:01:10.000ZHotel Mocking Bird Hillhttps://frugalnomads.ning.com/profile/BarbaraWalker
