Kayaking and paddle boarding are ideal ways to experience nature in an adventurous way. All you need is the equipment, some suitable clothing, and you are on your way to explore the rivers. Even beginners who have little experience of this craft learn to negotiate their way through the water quickly. Though the USA has many beautiful spots to indulge in this water sport activity, Idaho is considered the best of all. With nearly ten rivers and hundreds of lakes in the state it is named as the white water state. Though there are a lot of options to go boarding and kayaking in Idaho, here are listed some of the best spots.

Main Payette River

This spot is located in Banks, Idaho. It is the ideal escape during the hot summers. The river speed and flow around this area is ideal for beginners. The drops in the river can be easily maneuvered and is good for training purposes. The location is at the meeting point of the river’s north and south fork. During the peak season this place becomes full of activity with people coming out with their families to enjoy some water sports.

Boise River Park

This public river park is located on the Boise River. It has wave shapers that help create the unbreakable green waves. This place is also an amazing picnic spot offering a wide variety of flora and fauna. There are a number river based activities that people can indulge here like paddling, fishing and floating. It is ideal for practicing purposes but during the spring season when the water level is high then it is better suited for people with more experience and advanced knowledge of surfing and kayaking.

Kelly’s White Water Park

This is another public park located in Cascade, Idaho. Because the park has controlled rapids it is suitable for all ages. In fact there are lessons offered for free for children in the park. It is also one of the premier water parks in USA. It had the honor of hosting two national level Kayaking championships. Other than kayaking it is also an ideal spot for paddle boarders, surfers and tubers.

Middle Fork of the Salmon River

This portion of the Salmon River is located in Challis. This is by far the best spot to do paddle boarding. The river is also known as the river of no return because of its seemingly endless length of 425 miles. This portion of the river forms the main part of protected wilderness area. Though the river has different levels of difficulty, this particular portion is ideal for beginners who are just learning to paddle board.

Sawtooth National Recreation Area

This area is located near Stanley and is host to a number of water activities like kayaking and paddle boarding. It is also home to 300 lakes, the prominent ones being Redfish and Stanley. Redfish Lake has some beautiful and scenic camping spots too making it an excellent spot for a relaxing retreat.

We are going to discussing five awesome skiing resorts for you in Europe - four in France and one in Austria. Not only will this enable you to choose between the best and get all your needs in one place but it also provides you with all the information you need in one place.

Alpe d’Huez, France

This place is a true paradise for people who love skiing and the outdoors, It has a phenomenal full south facing view which stands at 1,860 m altitude situated in the Grandes Rousses mountain range. Not only does it have winter sports but summer sports to so you can mix it up a little.

The resort is also known for its very sunny climate. The Alpe d’Huez resort also links up to villages such as, Huez, Auris-en-Oisans, Ozen-Oisans, Villard-Reculas, Vaujany, Le Freney and La Gard. It stretches over 1/5th of the French territory. Alpe d’Huez has plenty of excellent ski and snowboard shops. Looking to upgrade some snowboard equipment? Perhaps some new snowboarding boots? I went with some Burton Boots, you can see a review here.

La Plagne, France

Montgenevre, France

Montgenevre has for many years prided itself in delighting thousands of people who come and visit from all over the world. This is a family friendly resort and a good choice for bringing the kids. It is only a few steps away from the border of Italy.

This French resort is the only resort connected to the Olympic domain situated in Sestrieres. There is some seriously steep terrain here! Make sure your equipment is in top shape, the Flux snowboard bindings I bought at the pro shop were just what I needed. You can see them here and decide if they are a good choice for you. Montgenevre has tremendous transportation thanks to the train station in the city of Oulx or the city of Briancon, is just fifteen minute drive away. Overall an excellent choice for snowboarding!

If you say “New York,” most people automatically think of the fast-paced hub of fashion, theater, finance, and technology and the most populous urban center on the US East Coast.

And yet The Big Apple is just the southernmost tip of New York State, a large region of suburban towns, rural hamlets, farmlands, forests, and now that winter is again approaching a plethora of high-quality, skiiable mountains and full-service ski resorts, more than 30 of them, many within easy driving distance of New York City.

Here are three of the most popular:

Belleayre Ski Center, in the Catskill Mountain town of Highmount, has grown into a full-service ski facility offering 171 acres of skiable terrain that includes 50 runs, a terrain parks, five glades, a progression course, and a 1X course, providing a variety of snow sport experiences for everyone.

Kids will enjoy the SkiWee Carousel, which helps teach skiing techniques. There are four separate lodges at various elevations, three with full-service cafeterias and other visitor amenities. Belleayre also operates its own snow-sports school.

A new high-speed gondola called Catskill Thunder will be unveiled in December 2017. A dizzying array of hotels, chain motels, inns as well as charming local shops and restaurants serve the area. Pro Tip: Do not underestimate your snowboarding clothing! Having a warm, waterproof snowboard jacket and pants can make a big difference.

Gore Mountain, in the town of North Creek in the Adirondack Mountains, is New York's second largest winter resort and one of its most popular. Visitors have access to 108 Alpine as well as snowshoe and cross-country trails spread over nine sides of four separate mountain peaks: Gore, Bear Mountain, Burnt Ridge Mountain and Little Gore Mountain.

There is terrain for every skill level, with 10 percent beginner and 40 percent advanced. Gore's snow-sports school offers daily, private, and long-term coaching and instruction to all ages, and skiers can enjoy their choice of six mountainside restaurants. Numerous options for staying nearby include everything from hotels to ski chalets, vacation rentals and B&Bs.

Windham Mountain, in the northern Catskill, offers a mix of beginner, intermediate and advanced runs as well as six terrain parks for snowboarders and freestylers, with 12 lifts over 285 skiable acres. The base area combines retail shops, dining, a children’s learning center, and more.

Recent improvements to the Boot Lab mean equipment renters will get an even better fitting. The resort town also gets high marks from visitors for its nightlife; in addition to night skiing, adult visitors can enjoy amenities like fine dining, nightclubs, hot tubbing, and more, with lodging available at the Windham Ridge Club or condominium complexes nearby.

Windham also makes a great day trip as it is just a two-hour drive from New York City. Each of these resorts offer year-round accommodations for travelers to enjoy mountain biking, hiking, gondola rides, music and food festivals, sporting events, and much more. So be sure to add New York State to the shortlist of fabulous and fun U.S. skiing destinations.

South Dakota is a backpackers dream! Filled with national parks, nature preserves, and even wilderness, you can pack up your tents, choose your locations and get ready to spend a glorious night under the stars. Sleep in your sleeping bag with your sleeping pads for extra added comfort.

The Black Hills National Forest is a prime spot for backpacking, with at least four primary areas to backpack and numerous trail heads leading from those areas. You can plan a backpacking adventure to last for a month and never see the same area twice.

Black Elk Wilderness

One of those areas is the Black Elk Wilderness. It’s the only wilderness area in the entire national park, making it unique from the rest. It covers more than 13,000 acres alone, giving you plenty of wilderness to explore. This area is for those who like roughing it, without developed facilities and horseback riding and hiking being the only forms of transportation permitted. When you head to the wilderness, you leave the high-tech, high-stress world behind and enter the isolation the wilderness has to offer.

The closest towns to this wilderness are Custer and Keystone and the forest service works very hard to protect this area. If you are planning to backpack here, human powered tools are allowed but nothing electric or mechanical. This area is known for deer ticks, so dress appropriately, hiking pants and a good hiking shirt or jacket is a good idea. Make sure you are aware of the rules so that you too can help protect the beauty of the Black Elk Wilderness.

Rapid City of Central Hills

If the wilderness isn’t your thing or you are just ready for something new, venture on over to Rapid City in the Central Hills. There are a variety of things to do, including bicycling, camping in a cabin, fishing, horseback riding, hiking and more. You can indulge in any of the exciting activities and then hit the trails to find a great place to sleep for the night and set up your tent and enjoy a nice evening or two under the stars.

Northern Hills at Spearfish

In the Northern Hills at Spearfish, there are five designated trails for backpacking. Depending on what time of year you visit South Dakota, you may end up backpacking through the snow. If you prefer to travel by snowmobile, there are over 300 miles of trails for you to travel. Skiing, horseback riding, and biking are also options, depending on the time of year.

Whether you are looking for a wilderness terrain to set up your trail tent or you prefer a snowy mountainous area to bunker down in your sleeping bag to keep warm, there is a place for you to go backpacking in South Dakota.

You can go off grid without electricity and spend time in nature, finding yourself, getting to know friends better or strengthening your family relationships. Pack your backpacking bag and get ready for a thrilling adventure in the Black Hills National Forest of South Dakota.

Deep-Sea Fishing in Costa Ricatag:frugalnomads.ning.com,2017-04-18:3169359:BlogPost:6532152017-04-18T17:09:08.000ZRobert Walshhttps://frugalnomads.ning.com/profile/RobertWalsh

Of all the things to do in Costa Rica, deep-sea fishing is definitely at the top of the list. In fact Costa Rica has 95 world records and highly regarded as one of the top sport fishing destinations in the world. The government of Costa Rinca intends on keeping it that way and has implemented policies to preserve it fishing locations.

Marlin is at the top of the sport-fishing list for anglers to target. The blue marlin is one of the larger sport fish in the world and can reach 11 feet in length while weighing in at anywhere from just under 200 pounds to over 400.

Catching a marlin is something you will not soon forget. They are famous for their high leaps out of the water, speed and strength. Marlin is only one of the sport fish found off the Costa Rican coast. It is also rich in wahoo, dorado ad yellowfin tuna.

Here are some of the top fishing locations in Costa Rica:

Central and South Pacific

This region stretches from Jaco to Golfito, which includes the Osa Peninsula, world famous for record-breaking fish catches. The season here is from December to April for sailfish, but there is also some marlin caught here, as well. The ocean is flat and calm this time of year and ideal for fishing. The summer months of June through August it’s a mix of fish that can be caught although tuna is among the most popular target along with dorado.

Once fall comes around, September and October are the slow time of year, when the weather tends to be wet and rough. This time of year fishing pretty much comes to a halt. Once November rolls around, fishing picks up into the December high season.

North Pacific

This region runs from the Nicoya Peninsula to Nicaragua. The fishing season runs from June to October, when the winds are calm and water is relatively flat. This is the season for sailfish but there is are also decent amounts of marlin and tuna as well. If you’re lucky you may catch one of each on a single fishing trip!

The summer season from December to March is the off season. The winds are strong from the east off Lake Nicaragua and makes the water rough; as a result, fishing is better in the southern Pacific region.

Caribbean

The Caribbean coastal area, especially the northern region, has some excellent tarpon fishing. Tarpon don’t tend to range too far, unlike marlin and sailfish, and as a result the fishing is good year-round.

However, the weather has a large impact on conditions and February to May and the months of September and October are much better. During these months, the wind and water are calm and flat, making for the best conditions.

You don’t have to be a professional fisherman to enjoy deep sea fishing in Costa Rica. There are fish that can be caught no matter your skill level and ability. Just be sure to plan your trip accordingly to region and time of year!

My Favorite Dive Spots in French Polynesiatag:frugalnomads.ning.com,2017-03-18:3169359:BlogPost:6519422017-03-18T10:56:36.000ZRobert Walshhttps://frugalnomads.ning.com/profile/RobertWalsh

Tahiti is a goldmine for divers of all skill levels. It has something to offer for everyone and anyone. The dive sites here are some of the best in the world and mostly unspoiled. Tahiti is located in the southern Pacific Ocean, and is home to thousands of varieties of marine life and beautiful Coral Reefs.

These are the spots I liked the best:

Moorea

Moorea is located within the heart of French Polynesia, and is a fantastic place to visit if you are daring and love to try new things. What is the main attraction here you ask? Hand-fed Sharks and Stingrays. Most people would think to never try to feed a Shark, with your own hands! are you mad?

If you are daring, you will find yourself swimming with, and feeding Blacktip Sharks. Fortunately reef Sharks are generally harmless, so you should not be in any danger. Just be sure to bring dive camera to document feeding the sharks, otherwise no one will believe you!

Bora Bora

Bora Bora is the jewel of Tahiti, and the most well-known location in Tahiti. Although it is mainly known for its beauty above, the sights under the water are still no short of stunning. When you dive here, you will find that paradise is just 40 feet down.

Bora Bora’s lagoon is a fan favourite, simply because of beautiful coral ledges and cliffs that the lagoon offers. Just grab your snorkel gear and you can easily see some of the best spots from the beach. Bora Bora’s beauty doesn’t stop at the lagoon, as there are countless types of marine life constantly on display. If you want to experience heaven on earth, look no further than Bora Bora.

Rangiroa

Rangiroa is another stunning area in Tahiti. Rangiroa is special because it has the second largest Atoll in the world, which is the ring of coral around a lagoon. It is said that when you are at one end of the Atoll, you can’t see the end of the other side. That’s massive! This Atoll has led to Rangiroa being rich in marine life, making this location a must visit when you are in Tahiti. Here the water is warm year round so no wetsuit is necessary.

Manihi

Manihi is located 330 miles away from Tahiti. This location is home to some of the best diving spots in the world. Manihi also has one of the most amazing Atolls in the world, and is regarded as one the most scenic Atolls. A specific treasure that is found in Manihi is a black Pearl, which is a great reason to visit this beautiful area. Who knows, you may end up finding a pearl for yourself. Of course, Manihi has no shortage of beautiful marine life and coral, and is a beautiful, tranquil area that is appealing if you like remote areas.

Colorado is home to a wide variety of scenery from desert to thick forests. With this variety there is something for everyone. During the summer you have the ability to choose from over 4,000 campgrounds! There are 44 state parks and one state forest. Plus you can be in the shadows of the Great Rocky Mountains that will give you a breathtaking view. So if you are into the outdoors, this is the place for you.

These are five of my favorite hiking trails and campgrounds.

Four Pass Loop

As the name suggests, this has to do with fours. It will take you about four days to complete this trek in the Maroon Bells Wilderness. It’ll take you over four mountain passes where you can see lakes and wildflowers and waterfalls. But this is not for the weak.

Make sure that you are prepared, as there is an 8,000-foot gain in elevation. Will it be hard? Yes. But will it be worth it? Undoubtedly. There are small campgrounds along the Four Pass Loop trail, bring a hammock for sleeping and a stove. Campfires are not permitted here.

Longs Peak

Take a trek to the tallest peak in Rocky Mountain National Park and see for miles in all directions when you get to the top. The trail is 14 1/2 miles round trip, rising more than 5,000 feet in elevation. It will be challenging the entire way but it will be worth every ounce of pain you will feel the next morning.

Crater Lake

Because this list wouldn’t be complete without one that literally anyone can do. By far one of the prettiest sites, it has a lake that you can see yourself and the adjacent mountains in. Starting at Maroon Lake you hike to the also beautiful Crater Lake that allows you to just simply take in the sites without feeling like you are going to keel over. If you are looking for an easier trek, try this one.

Flat Tops Trail-Camping

For camping you can come to this remote, but easily accessible area for some peace and quiet. Trappers Lake Lodge is a great place to go from May to September where you can rent boats, horses and cabins. There is also a quaint general store, restaurant and bar to stop in at. At Trappers Lake you can’t just camp anywhere, but there are additional sites throughout the trail that allow for you to pitch a tent anywhere. How cool is that?

Buffalo Pass-Camping

Another place for beautiful sites and hot springs resort to sooth all those tired muscles. If you want to get to the top by Highway 14, you’ll need to have a 4x4 vehicle. Up at the top you can get to Summit Lake where you can do some fishing and float in any hand powered boats/canoes, etc. This is a popular spot to go to and has about 15 camping sites that do fill up a quickly. Don’t wait and go late, get there early.

These are only a few of the places you’ll want to check out when you go to Colorado for all your outdoor activities, but there are plenty more. So if you are planning to get outside, check out everything that Colorado has to offer. You won’t be disappointed.
My Favorite Mountain Biking and Cycling Spots in Arizonatag:frugalnomads.ning.com,2017-01-13:3169359:BlogPost:6495342017-01-13T15:03:25.000ZRobert Walshhttps://frugalnomads.ning.com/profile/RobertWalsh

Arizona is home to desert valleys which makes it ideal for bicycling; however, it’s mountain range is also the perfect place to go mountain biking. Below you can find the best places to go mountain biking and bicycling in Arizona. Be sure to bike safely, always wear a helmet.

Arizona Trail

This trail is one of the most beloved in Arizona. It begins at the Coronado National Memorial, which is around the Mexican border, and expands up until the Rincon Mountain further north. The region contains several hotels, and the three-star hotels average at around $144 per night. Arizona Trail features some of Arizona’s most beautiful landscapes and ecosystems.

Sunrise Park Resort

This resort is used as a ski resort in colder temperatures; however, the trails are utilized for hiking and mountain biking when it gets warm. In this resort, visitors get to witness the three peaks of the mountain, 800 acres of land, and a sunrise that reaches over ten thousand feet above sea level.

The three-star hotels in this region cost around one hundred and twenty dollars per day, which is much cheaper than some other resorts in the US. While not yet mandatory, due to the rough terrain the use of a helmet is strongly encouraged by the resort.

Grand Canyon National Park

One of Arizona’s most beautiful attractions is the Grand Canyon, which is made of red rocks that contains millions of years of the Earth’s history. This park is home to some of the most extravagant hiking and mountain biking trails in The United States.

You can make this trip a vacation, though, because there is also space to go camping in the area. If you don’t feel like booking that $132 hotel room, you can always set up a camp and make this one of the most memorable experiences of your life.

Mount Lemmon

Mount Lemmon is one of Arizona’s more challenging and intriguing trails for cyclers and it happens to be the longest climb in Arizona. Its highest elevation is 8206 feet, which is why it is considered to be the most intense trail in the state. A benefit of making this climb, however, is that the higher one ascends up the mountain, the colder it becomes. Arizona is known to be a very hot state and this bicycle ride is a form of salvation from that heat.

Mount Graham

On this mountain, cyclists have to pedal for almost eight thousand feet before they reach the highest peak of Mt. Graham. Those who road cycle on this trail go on for a distance of forty miles and the entire experience is not only challenging, but provides a heightened sense of pride when the challenging route is conquered.

Arizona has a lot of desert, but in northern Arizona there are quite a few mountains. Not only is it known as being one of the hottest states in The United States, but it is also home to the best places for mountain biking and road bicycling. Here, there are luxurious climbs that will no doubt break a sweat for anyone who is daring enough to try them. To find out which locations to visit, reference the above list.

5 Top Spots for Paddleboarding and Kayaking in Hawaiitag:frugalnomads.ning.com,2016-12-15:3169359:BlogPost:6481482016-12-15T23:39:12.000ZRobert Walshhttps://frugalnomads.ning.com/profile/RobertWalsh

Hawaii is famous for its many beautiful beaches and relaxed atmosphere. It has always been one of the world’s favorite destinations for water sports lovers. The islands there boast of some of the best stands up paddle board locations in the world.

There are so many great paddle board locations to choose from in Hawaii, but here are my favorite spots for paddleboarding;

Ala Moana, Oahu

Ala Moana is one of the top spot for surfers especially for beginners because it has a protected bay and flat water which makes it easier for first timers to train properly. Other packages offered at Ala Moana include; Blue Planet Surf for rentals or sales and paddle board lessons for first timers. One neat thing I tried was an inflatable SUP, I was very impressed with how well it worked.

Keauhou Bay, Kona

Keauhou Bay has an interesting ancient history attached to it. It's the birthplace of King Kamehameha III in Kona District. This paddle board bay is known for its beautiful harbor and its coastline of dried lava beds. This bay is not just known for its great stand up paddle location, It's also a place famous for kayaking and snorkeling as well.

At the south side of the bay, there is a spot called the “End of the World” with beautiful sea caves and cliffs that you will be tempted to jump from. But it's recommended that you don't go too close to that spot because the water there is far from calm and the shorelines are not safe. Keauhou Bay also offers beautiful shopping malls as well as two golf courses for those who don't want to get to the water.

Kealakekua Bay, Kona

This is a beautiful kayaking spot in Hawaii with an ancient historic site. It is the birthplace of the famous Captain Cook Monument. This ancient site attracts a lot of visitors and surfers from far and near, and there are no paved roads to this monument, so you are sure to have unrestricted access. You have to walk a long way from the road to water. I rented a inflatable kayak, and packed it in in a backpack. I would highly recommend you do this, if you go there

Visiting this beautiful spot for the first time, it is best you plan your paddle boarding in the morning hours since the wind picks up in the afternoon which makes the water rough.

Pua’ena Point Beach Park, Oahu

Pua'ena beach park is located on the North Shore of Oahu. It's a great place for first timers to learn surfing as the waves are usually pretty calm also a safe area to try out paddling in small waves.

Pua’ena beach also offers a great spot for picnics, and lots of families/visitors hang out here to have a good time. Be sure to tread carefully around the vegetation areas on the beach, because everything island is private property - aside from that you are free to go up and down the shore since the beaches are all public property.

Pops in Waikiki, Oahu

Pops or Popular as it's known in Waikiki is a great spot for surfers looking to experience paddling in waves. Those of you who are crowd shy will love it there because it is less crowded than other areas in Waikiki.
My 4 Top Choices for My Europe Ski Trips in 2017tag:frugalnomads.ning.com,2016-11-18:3169359:BlogPost:6470852016-11-18T13:48:57.000ZRobert Walshhttps://frugalnomads.ning.com/profile/RobertWalsh

Europe has the ideal combination of tall mountains and lots of snow and that means it has plenty of great skiing destinations come winter.

Of course, you don’t want to waste your time hitting average ski resorts or slopes, we want the best there is. I will share my research on the top European ski resorts and what they offer. In preparation I went out and bought some new ski clothing and gear for the trip.

La Grave, France

If you want an ideal ski mountaineering location, you can’t do much better than La Grave. This location is only for the most intense and thrill-seeking skiers, boasting 7,000-vertical-feet of glaciers, cliffs, couloirs, and no-fall zones. This slope is also free of patrols, lifts, and just about everything you’d expect from a resort: because there is no resort.

You’re on your own up there unless you hire a guide, which may be what some individuals want. Either way, it’s definitely one of the most exhilarating choices on this list, though it is obviously only suited for experts. Dressing appropriately here is not an option, from what I have read, the weather can change on a dime and a very warm, breathable ski jacket and pants is not an option.

Also have an avalanche transmitter is a great idea as well. I don't want to scare you away(and me) but this is a place where you need to pay attention to the changing conditions.

Saint Anton, Austria

Looking for a great après-ski destination? If so, look no further than Saint Anton, with over 200 miles of runs and twice that in back and side country terrain. Aside from all that, there are several nearby towns and cities that offer great recreational activities when you call it quits on skiing for the day.

Andermatt, Switzerland

If powder snow is more your thing, Andermatt has the stuff in abundance every year, coating its massive slopes, including the 9,721-foot Gemsstock, which houses the five thousand foot Giraffe, a twisting and turning slope filled with bowls that are sure to make for one wild ride. Thankfully there is plenty of urban life nearby, so you’ll have plenty of other things to do when the day comes to a close and you’re done skiing your heart out.

Alagna, Italy

The best place in Europe for long cruisers? Alagna, next to a rustic and tiny farming community and mostly unadorned by the usual trappings of a ski lodge - though it thankfully does have a gondola to get you to the top. There are several skiing areas available on the mountain, including up to one hundred and fifteen miles of runs. However, the real appeal of Alagna is the Malfatta and Vittoria couloirs, two marquee backcountry lines, and La Balma, a six-mile route that twists through a glacier for some wicked skiing. Unfortunately, the nightlife here is pretty dead end, so you’ll definitely want to come for the skiing and the skiing alone.

In the end, Europe is a treasure trove of excellent ski destinations and resorts, but they all fit a different bill to a T. Take into account what you’re really looking for in an ideal winter sports getaway, and you’ll have a much better chance of picking out a location that will guarantee a satisfying trip and even more satisfying entertainment, whether that’s in skiing itself or the night life party afterwards.

My birthday is this month and I turned 50, so wanting to do something I always I want to do I headed over the Munich, Germany for the famous Oktoberfest. Contrary to what you might think, it starts in mid September and goes into the first week of October.

It was part of a larger trip that I will write about another time. We got into Munich on the Friday before it started and planned on going to the opening ceremonies. Honestly we had not done a whole lot of research before going so we had a lot to learn.

Which brings me to my first lesson, if you want to actually sit down inside a tent and have a beer, you should reserve a seat. However, you need to do that about a YEAR in advance. Well obviously we didn’t do that so we had to just show up. Luckily we changed our minds and decided to go day two.

Lesson two; if you don’t reserve in advance go during the week, preferably in the morning. We went about noon on Sunday, we were however very fortunate. It was a lousy rainy day, this was a GOOD thing. Why, you ask?

Well, it kept away a lot of the crowds. We were able to get into all the major tents before they closed. Yes, the “tents” close and you then cannot get in, maybe for the rest of the day. Side note, why they are called “tents” is beyond me, there is nothing tentlike about them. They are huge buildings, basically decorated warehouses with might have been a fabric roof.

Lesson three; if you want to drink a beer, you need to be SEATED in a tent. You cannot get served just standing around, and that’s all we were able to do. You also cannot drink outside of the tents! There are no “beer stands” anywhere. If you’re not in a tent, seated, no drinking for you!

Luckily, there was some outside seating that was covered and we were able to secure a seat there and get our liters of beer.

Lesson four, you cannot be shy, you will have to ask people if you can sit at their tables. You are never going to just find an open table.

Lesson five; bring cash, there are no credit cards accepted anywhere that I saw. Not even the souvenir stands where I bought a stein and a shirt.

Lesson six; bring Tylenol or your favorite headache medicine, I had the worst hangover the next morning - something about that draft beer!

It was a fun time and I highly recommend it, just do some planning and learn from my mistakes.

In case you didn't already know it, Puerto Rico is a commonwealth territory of the United Sates. While Spanish is the official language, just about everyone knows some English, so you should be fine if you don't speak any.

As you can imagine the area is tropical, with temperatures nearing 90 degrees year round. There is minimal change in water temperature through the different seasons, making this a great destination for both snorkeling and scuba diving.

Since the temperature only fluctuates around 5 degrees throughout the seasons, there is never a bad time of year to visit. One thing I found while I was there is a new type of mask called a "full face" snorkel mask. If you haven't seen one yet, they are awesome. They cover your whole face and allow you to breathe through your nose! You can see some of these new full face snorkel masks here.

I have compiled a list of 5 of the best sites that I went to and recommend you do as well!

Fallen Rock

This is a top dive site in the area. Immense coral boulders form a beautiful drop off point that goes beyond 100 feet in depth. At the uppermost part of the reef, depths are around 65 feet. At Fallen Rock, prepare to see an array of fish and other aquatic creatures wandering in the deep. There is some even better diving around 100 feet deep but you will need an advanced open water certification and use of a dive computer is highly recommended. I had just bought a new one so I was good but if you don't have one yet, here are some good dive computers.

Mona Island

Off the western portion of Puerto Rico lies Mona Island. This popular snorkeling destination offers the opportunity to visualize every imaginable color strewn throughout nature. From rainbow-colored fish, to turtles, rays, and more, this area is known to contain the largest concentration of reef fish in all of Puerto Rico.

If looking to snorkel in this area, be sure to bring your own equipment, as there are no rental stations or shops nearby!

Coffin Island

This snorkeling location is a nature preserve located on the southern coast of Puerto Rico. In this area, there are designated snorkeling trails that are marked in order to make the snorkeling experience an educational one. Learn what you are seeing around you, while embracing the incredible beauty in this scenic, underwater experience.

On the island, there are hiking trails that lead to an old lighthouse, and various other locations worth checking out. Grab the ferry to get to the island and be there in under an hour!

Fajardo

If you are looking for a diving experience with a variety of views, from reefs to caverns to channels and more, Fajardo is an excellent choice and was my favorite dive site by far. The marine life is abundant, and many divers are able to actually hand feed fish living amongst the coral. This town is in the eastern portion of Puerto Rico, making it destination in a different area than many other diving hotspots. Check out barracudas and eels, and get some need underwater shots!

San Juan

This diving site is right off of the beach, making it a quick, close option – allowing for more convenience. There are incredible reefs in various shapes and sizes, and these reefs house a wealth of marine life.

Maine is the outdoor haven of the northeastern USA. Between the beaches and the camping, there is no shortage of outdoor activities here for people to enjoy.

There's a reason that this is such a popular location in this part of the country. It's an idyllic location that offers the best of every world: old charming towns, stunning landscape, and great places for kayaking and paddling.

There are so many different places that you can choose from in this gorgeous state that picking only five places was a difficult task.

Damariscotta River

You can paddle and kayak your way through this gorgeous location, where you can paddle through islands and oyster farms. There are a couple of different routes here\ - one with calmer waters, while the other is for more adventurous thrill-seekers. If you are new to this area, ask locals where the best place to kayak around.

One particularly interesting location here to note is the Dodge Point Preserve. There is a beach, as well as trails that you can enjoy in this area. This place is not easy to get to, however, so you will need to pack in your paddle board or kayak, I would recommend an inflatable SUP, which you can easily carry in with a backpack.

St. John’s River

Here you are able to get as calm or as wild of a journey as you want while you are kayaking. The St Johns River is often considered to be the best kayaking and paddling area on this side of the country for this very reason. Some people enjoy the thrills from whitewater kayaking while others want a more peaceful and relaxing experience and each can go to different parts of the river to get these experiences. During this river adventure, you are going to take in some of the best that the Maine wilderness has to offer.

Acadia National Park

If sea kayaking or paddling is more your speed, this is one place that you absolutely must see. The kayaking here is good for both experienced and new kayakers, though people with less experience should take in a tour rather than explore on their own. This trip will let you see a side of this national park that you may not have seen before as you kayak by this stunning shoreline.

Scarborough Marsh

This is the largest salt marsh in the state, which means that it is worth checking out on its own merit. If you are someone who loves to take in nature, especially birds, this is the perfect location for you to visit.

This location is actually also a critical habitat for a wide variety of birds, including species like the egrets, glossy ibis and herons, just to name a few of the many majestic birds that you are able to find here. There are even tours that you can partake in here that may be very interesting to the nature lover.

Sebago Lake

Not as well-known as some other spots, Sebago Lake is truly a gem that offers amazing camping locations and water activities for visitors. The wildlife here is simply exquisite and you can get a glimpse of the charming sight know as Frye Island. The lake is around 45 square miles and is a calm little place to enjoy nature.

(Some of the hiking in these parks is quite remote. I would highly recommend using a GPS device or a hiking watch that has GPS so you don’t get lost. If you plan on camping in the parks, keep in mind there are few if any facilities and you will need to bring in your own shelter. I would recommend a lightweight backpacking tent and be sure to bring plenty of food and water.)

That said, here are my top five recommendations:

Ohanapecosh, Mount Rainier National Park

Though there are three camping grounds inside Mount Rainier National Park and of course, all three are famous, impressive, and beautiful. of the three, The reasons Ohanapecosh is top on my list is the river that runs right it; the luxuriant age-old forest; and the fact that of the three it has least crowds. Also, farther along on the road is the renowned Grove of the Patriarchs track. Here you can see some of the biggest trees imaginable.

There are some very nice facilities here, including water and flush toilets. You can book in advance, for only $15 a night. With 188 camps to choose from, Ohanapecosh offers you a budget-friendly natural environment for you and your family. However, there are no cooking facilities, so you might want to plan with that in mind.

Moran State Park, Orcas Island, San Juan Islands

Moran Park (top) is simply breathtaking - from the camp, you can climb to the top of a small mountain and let your eyes feast on the jaw-dropping view all around.

The park is compromised of 166 camps, which are spread out in five areas, four of which are in the vicinity of the park's fresh water lakes. You should aim to go to Mountain Lake if you want more privacy. The trail is fantastic for early-morning walks.

Also, you can choose between hiking, cycling or a drive to the top of Mount Constitution, an impressive 2,400 feet high; while at the top, gaze at the view from the 1930s New Deal public works-era surveillance tower.

For an amazing $12.25 a night, you will agree that is worth every penny of your money. You can reserve up to 9 months in advance.

photo: Susan Ridley

Kalaloch, Olympic National Park

Have you always wanted to camp next to the ocean? If so, Kalaloch (above) is the place to hit, sitting astride some of the most accessible areas of this national park's expansive 73 miles of wild Pacific coastline.

Some camps are set right next to the ocean, where you will be serenaded by the symphony of crashing waves at the shore, while others are set back but still allow scenic Pacific views. You can get right down to the shore via several some stairs. Once there, you can take long, bracing strolls in either direction as you enjoy the wind in your hair.

You may want to make your reservations in advance as there is always a crowd. It is open year round and the charges per night are $14-$18. Water is available, as well as flush toilets.

Cape Disappointment State Park

An expansive 1,882 acres park on the Long Beach Peninsula, Cape Disappointment State Park in addition to camping facilities features two lighthouses; two miles of ocean beach and hiking trails; old-growth forests; lovely lakes and streams; salt- and freshwater marshes; and of course plenty of beach exploration including fascinating tidal pools.

Charges: $5 for ages 18 and older; $2.50 for ages 7-17, and free for 6 or younger.

Rattlesnake Ledge Trail

A moderate-rated trail that features a lake, Rattlesnake Ledge Trail This is a fantastic place for hiking, offers some activities and is open all year. Dogs can use the path, but they must be kept on a leash. Atop Rattlesnake Ridge, you can catch breathtaking views of Mount Washington and Mount Si.

The summer months are very busy here. You will be able to catch panoramic views from above Rattlesnake Ridge. There is also a fantastic park situated down below. Many folks come to use the lake in the warmer months; neither motor boats nor fishing is permitted, however.

Well living there most of my life, I can tell you NY has some pretty good skiing. It's obviously hardly the Rockies or Alps, but it's pretty good.

New York’s climate gives us the perfect opportunity to ski and snowboard in various popular skiing destinations in the state, bounded by the snowy region of the Niagara frontier and its Southern Tier, the hilly, snowy areas near the border with Pennsylvania.

There are some wonderful ski resorts out here with fun après-ski, as well. Just a heads-up, though: the trails in the early part of the season can be a bit rough, I would recommend proper safety equipment like a ski helmet and good ski goggles to give you the ability to spot hazards. And now, with that little warning out of the way, here are my top 5 skiing sports in New York.

Bristol Mountain Resort

Without a doubt, Bristol Mountain Resort near the Finger Lakes town of Canandaigua is one of the most popular destinations for skiers and snowboarders not just in New York but the eastern USA. Providing a total of 138 acres of skiable terrain which is spread out over 34 trails, Bristol will give you an experience unlike anything you’ve had before. There’s so much you can do in this resort, including night skiing and snowboarding - and it doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or a pro!

Windham Mountain Ski Resort

Windham Mountain Ski Resort (top) in located in the northern Catskills Mountains has the distinction of being a family friendly resort yet also great for expert skiers. Just a glimpse of the surroundings of Windham Mountain will tell a lot about what you’re being offered. With a summit at 3,100 feet, the mountain offers around 52 trails all spread out in 285 acres of skiable terrain. The resort’s activities aren’t just limited to skiing; sports like snowboarding and
terrain parks will give you the experience of a lifetime.

Gore Mountain Ski Resort

Gore Mountain is the largest ski resort in the state, actually spanning four sister mountains in the Adirondacks - Gore Mountain itself, along with Bear Mountain, Little Gore Mountain, and Burnt Ridge Mountain. - presenting some of New York's most challenging skiing/snowboarding terrain. The trails are divided in such a way that every skill level is accommodated.

Lake Placid Ski Resort

A serene village surrounded by snow-capped mountains makes Lake Placid Ski resort a favorite among the snow-sporty set - and of a quality so good it has hosted the Winter Olympics twice. There are 27 trails of varied levels of difficultires, and an extra special bonus here is the opportunity for other winter sports such as bobsledding.

Tuxedo Ridge Ski Center

Located at Sterling Forest in the Hudson Valley's Ramapo Mountains (and the closest of these five to New York City), Tuxedo Ridge is a great place to learn the art of skiing. In fact, its main focus is to teach families and children how to ski, as it has terrain specially designed to help a beginner (its "bunny slope" is especially well known as kid- and beginner-friendly). However if you’re looking for a challenge, one of the expert trails can also easily provide it.
