In these trying times, we can all use a laugh. And when it comes to travel, the general public can usually be relied upon for prime material. I just recently again came across a clipping that came out several years ago, in which a survey by the Association of British Travel Agents revealed 20 of the most ridiculous complaints by holidaymakers. So check out the following - some are merely ill informed, while others are silly, and still others downright jawdroppingly stupid. To whit:

1. “I think it should be explained in the brochure that the local store does not sell proper biscuits like custard creams or ginger nuts.”

2. “It’s lazy of the local shopkeepers to close in the afternoons. I often needed to buy things during 'siesta' time — this should be banned.”

3. “On my holiday to Goa in India, I was disgusted to find that almost every restaurant served curry. I don’t like spicy food at all.”

Sue Huhn

4. A tourist at a top African game lodge overlooking a water hole, who spotted a visibly aroused elephant, complained that the sight of this rampant beast ruined his honeymoon by making him feel “inadequate.”

5. “We booked an excursion to a water park but no one told us we had to bring our swimming costumes and towels.”

6. A woman threatened to call police after claiming that she’d been locked in her hotel room by staff. In fact, she had mistaken the “do not disturb” sign on the back of the door as a warning to remain in the room. (Er, may we at SunnyRentals.com suggest next time rent a holiday home? ;))

7. A guest at complained his soup was too thick and strong. He was inadvertently slurping the gravy at the time.

9. “We found the sand was not like the sand in the brochure. Your brochure shows the sand as yellow but it was white.”

10. “Topless sunbathing on the beach should be banned. The holiday was ruined as my husband spent all day looking at other women.”

11. “It took us nine hours to fly home from Jamaica to England, it only took the Americans three hours to get home.”

mjmew

12. “No one told us there would be fish in the sea.
Every year millions of tourists from every corner of the earth flock to Rome. The city enjoys a never-ending stream of visitors, simply because there is so much worth seeing. It might take you weeks and weeks to see and do everything in this open-air museum, but if you are going for a short weekend break, there are 5 must-dos in Rome!

#1. Watch the sun goes down over the city

The best spot for sunset watching is probably the Pinciana Hill. It is part of the park of Villa Borghese and close to Piazza del Popolo, which is the location of Earth in Dan Brown’s Angels and Demons. It is ideal for taking a little evening picnic there.

#2. The Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps

The Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps are two of the major attractions in the city and are often very crowded. Although it’s worth the wait, just to toss a coin into the water of the fountain – the legend says that one who does so, will once again come back to the city.

#3. Loads of loads of ice cream

The Italian gelato is something quite different from what we usually perceive to be ice cream. Must try it! Just walk into one of the many gelateria in the city. There is a well-known (and unfortunately expensive) gelaterianear the Trevi Fountain, San Crispino on Via della Srl Panetteria, 42.

#4. Cozy Italian neighborhoods

Not too far from the sights of historical Rome there is still so much to see. Trastevere and Testaccio Pigneto, especially, have a little less tourists and will give you good sense of the local lifestyle. It is best to visit these areas in the evenings.

#5. Select the correct month for your visit

It is an obvious thing, but we must sat that Rome is perhaps in her the best in spring, early summer or autumn. August is probably the worst month to visit Rome – the metropolitan is boiling hot and Italians also have vacation in August and many restaurants and other attractions are closed.

Wild & Wonderful Water Adventures in Croatiatag:frugalnomads.ning.com,2014-12-30:3169359:BlogPost:3933942014-12-30T18:58:30.000ZVelimira Velikovahttps://frugalnomads.ning.com/profile/VelimiraVelikova

Croatia has long been a hidden gem for travellers. In recent years, it’s become one of the most popular destinations in Europe due to its fantastic climate, stunning scenery and gorgeous beaches. A private holiday home will allow you to enjoy the very best that Croatia has to offer. And if you’re looking for a more adrenaline-filled water activity than floating on a Lilo, then Croatia is definitely the place for you!

Some of the most exciting ways to really get up close to nature are rafting, kayaking and canyoning. Kayaking or rafting down the rivers as they flow through the unspoilt and varied landscape is a real thrill. If you’re looking for a serious adrenaline kick, try canyoning – the best way to explore Croatia‘s spectacular canyons. Walking through rapids, sliding through tunnels, swimming in river pools and abseiling down waterfalls is a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Whether you’re an experienced sailor or a beginner, you’ll be amazed by the crystal clear water and the multitude of islands, islets and reefs.

#1. Etna – Europe’s largest active volcano

Etna is a must. To see Europe’s largest active volcano, is a fantastic experience. We recommend getting right to the top along with a volcano guide and wander around the crater.

#2. Ciccino’s pizzeria in Castelmola

Really nice place that not many get to. Ciccino itself is old folk singer and always sits and plays and sings for the guests, who sit under the stars in a hidden corner in Piazza Duomo. A better night in Siciliansk spirit can not be found!

#3. Volcanic islands off Sicily‘s northern coast

Visit the Aeolian Islands with their mud baths and Stromboli with its still active volcano.

#4. Discover the countryside

Do not miss a trip to the countryside. For example, the route Gole Alcantara – Motta Camastra – Castiglione di Sicilia – Linguaglossa and back to Taormina. Stop off at a winery and have lunch at an agriturismo. Especially nice is it in the spring when the almond trees blossom.

#5. The special atmosphere of Ortygia

Go to Ortygia, the historic center of Syracuse. Here you can see the old part of town with the cathedral, the statue of Saint Lucia, the remains of ancient temples and stroll around the narrow streets.

Psst! The most common mistake people make when planning a trip to Sicily, they make because they do not realize how big the island really is. You do not have time to see everything in a week, there are big distances and my advice is to concentrate on the part of the island you will find most interesting. From Taormina to Palermo takes at least 4 hours by car and many more hours if you choose to travel by bus or train. It could become stressful to take it as a day trip!
Eating, Drinking, and Sleeping in Rometag:frugalnomads.ning.com,2014-10-22:3169359:BlogPost:3697112014-10-22T01:31:49.000ZVelimira Velikovahttps://frugalnomads.ning.com/profile/VelimiraVelikova

‘Pecorino‘ owner and chef, Alfredo, is one of Rome’s most skilful cooks. At his trattoria you can enjoy cucina romana – authentic Roman food – just like in the old days. The items on the menu are priced above average, but affordable and really worth it. You can always get the best of the season – if visiting in the spring, the world’s best artichokes! And the clientele represent the finely Testaccio neighborhood’s colorful inhabitants. After dinner, take a walk around the area – Pecorino is literally in the middle of exciting Roman ruins. Enjoy a drink amongst old amphorae, in the basement of neighboring On-the-Rox bar.

They have traditional Italian dishes on the menu and not fewer than 400 different wines. The owner, Giacomo, has a great passion for wine and is a trained sommelier. Try the daily menu, which consists of a choice of three appetizers and three main courses, each combined with a suitable glass of local wine. Their porcini e chicory, fettuccine with mushrooms and chicory and abbacchio al forno, are top class.

Common travel illnesses like too much sun and sexually transmitted infections can be easily avoided if you apply common sense. But what about the nasty diseases that you might come across? Here are a few to watch out for:

1. Montezuma’s Revenge aka Traveler’s Diarrhea is probably the most common travel illness, because it can be found anywhere. Unfortunately it is also one of the most difficult to prevent, because it strikes regardless of where you are in the world. You can reduce the chances of getting diarrhea by only drinking bottled purified water and avoiding fresh fruit, salad and vegetables as they may have been washed in contaminated water. The E. coli bacteria is very
sensitive to heat so ensure your food is well cooked and piping hot throughout!

2. Giardiasis – Also caused by contaminated food or water and, unfortunately, can be found anywhere in the world. It comes from an intestinal parasite which causes gastroenteritis. The best way to reduce your chances of getting it is building up some smart eating and drinking habits.

3. Yellow Fever – Mosquitoes carry the disease with symptoms including flu-like signs and a fever. Yellow fever is more prevalent in South America and sub-Saharan Africa so make sure you get vaccinated prior travel. Arm yourself with insect repellent lotions and sprays, and plug in repellants, as well. Make sure your room has mosquito nets fitted on the windows and use the mosquito net around your bed. Wearing long sleeves and long pants in forested areas, near water and after the sun goes down will help to avoid bites. Vaccinations are required 10 days before arrival to Africa, Asia, some parts of South America and the Caribbean.

4. Dengue Fever – This nasty disease is also attributed to pesky mosquitoes! Symptoms of dengue fever included severe flu-like symptoms and muscle and joint pain. Parts of the Caribbean, South Pacific, Asia, Latin America and Africa are affected and the same advice for avoiding mosquitoes applies as above.

5. Norovirus – A large group of people in close confines is a breeding setting for the disease. Norovirus is pretty unpleasant with symptoms including nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, but is rarely fatal. The virus causes gastroenteritis and spreads through contaminated food and water and food and unfortunately there is no prevention or treatment.

6. Lyme Disease – The bacteria from infected tick bites can cause Lyme Disease and is found in forest areas of Asia and Europe and in certain areas of North America. Make sure you use repellants to avoid symptoms including rashes, headaches and fevers.

7. Typhoid – Another disease to look out for is typhoid which is spread through contaminated food and drink via a bacteria. South Asia, Africa, South and Central America and the Caribbean are higher risk areas and typhoid, which you can be vaccinated against if traveling to a high-risk area, can be fatal. Vaccinations are recommended 10 days before travel.

8. Malaria – A bite from an infected mosquito (yet again!) could leave you with malaria, which can be potentially fatal and symptoms can include headaches and chills. Malarial diseases are found in much of the developing world (Latin America, Asia, Africa, the South Pacific, Caribbean and parts of Eastern Europe). Check whether your
destination is an affected area and get yourself to your doctor or health clinic to stock up on malaria prevention medications. You can reduce your chances of infection by stocking up on repellent sprays and use the mosquito nets in your room.

9. Hepatitis – The version most likely to affect travelers is Hepatitis A as is spread through water and uncooked foods. Hepatitis A is classified as an ‘acute liver disease,’ with symptoms including general fatigue, headaches, fever, jaundice and sore muscles. Vaccinations (2 weeks prior to travel) are highly recommended, no matter where you’re travelling to, for peace of mind.

There’s something about islands… If you close your eyes for a moment, you can almost hear the wind softly rustling through the palm trees and the waves lapping against the shore.
There’s something about islands… If you close your eyes for a moment, you can almost hear the wind softly rustling through the palm trees and the waves lapping against the shore. The idea of being cut off from the world and its hustle and bustle, in the company of a loved one, appeals to something deep within us all. It’s no surprise, then, that the exotic island of Bali always makes – or tops – the lists of the most romantic islands and top honeymoon destinations. Bali, with its sandy white beaches, sapphire-blue waters, ancient temples, tropical rainforests, volcanoes and waterfalls, is paradise in a coconut shell. But is it the most romantic island of them all? Just go and see for yourself! Here is a guide to the romantic side of Bali.

Beaches fit for the gods

What could be more romantic than strolling barefoot on the silky soft sand hand in hand with your loved one? Some of Bali‘s most beautiful white beaches can be found around Nusa Dua on the eastern side of the Bukit Peninsula. If you want a slice of paradise all to yourself, head over to the western side and discover its hidden coves and secluded beaches, such as Suluban and Balangan. To reach the popular Padang Padang Beach, you need to walk down a set of stone steps between two cliffs. As you stick your foot in the sand, a serene beach with crystal clear waters reveals itself. For the dreamiest day of all, take a boat over to Dream Beach on Lembongan Island. Spend the day snorkelling with sea turtles and fluorescent fish, and then enjoy a barbecue on the beach while watching the sun sink into the sea.

Unique and unforgettable experiences

When you’ve lazed a few days away on the beach, you might be in the mood for adventure. One thing is for sure: Bali has plenty to offer! How about hiking, cycling, diving, white-water rafting, camel riding, jungle trekking and elephant safaris? If you’re an early riser, you can go out with one of the boats leaving from Lovina Beachevery morning before dawn and watch the dolphins play as the sun rises. While you’re in the north, stay and explore the underwater world of coral reefs and shipwrecks around Menjangan Island. Or why not take a trip to the turtle conservation island Serangan, where you can help release baby turtles into the sea?

Prague is the capital of Bohemia – and the Czech Republic, of course. Avoid the summer crowds by visiting in spring, when the Golden City glistens in the sun and the cherry trees blossom. History is never far away in Prague – this city has seen everything from mad alchemists to velvet revolutions. After exploring the cobbled medieval squares and admiring the Gothic architecture in the Old Town, take a stroll over the famous Charles Bridge to the Lesser Side. Stop off at the tiny house where Franz Kafka worked and walk up Petrin Hill for stunning views over Prague Castle and Vltava. As the sun sets on a glorious spring day, sip a pilsner from one of the local microbreweries while soaking up the city’s warm atmosphere.

For centuries, people have been trying to explain the mystery behind Mona Lisa’s alluring smile. Well, the answer may be simpler than you’d think: she’s from Tuscany! Italians celebrate spring as the time when Mother Nature awakens from her winter sleep, and hold medieval festivals in her honour. Why not go there to celebrate with them? See the famous towns of Florence, Siena and Pisa, and then escape to the countryside with its rolling hills, picturesque villages, olive groves and rustic vineyards.
The winter is cold in New York, but when spring comes along, people come out to play again. And maybe the Big Apple tastes best in spring? Skip the mall and take a stroll in Central Park, smell the flowers at the Cherry Blossom Festival in Brooklyn Botanical Garden and marvel at the Dance Parade in May, where tens of thousands of dancers get jiggy on the streets. Wrap yourself in a blanket and see the New York skyline at sunset from 230 Fifth, one of the city’s many rooftop bars.
Since the late eighties and the opening up of Eastern Europe, Prague quickly became one of the trendy places to visit and rapidly evolved to offer all kind of tourist amenities.
#7. The Irresistible One: Lisbon

Lisbon is the one of the greatest continental capitals and a perfect getaway to slip away for a romantic break. Mid-February in the Portuguese capital brings sparkling days, ideal for exploring the seven hills over which Lisbon is draped, and for discovering the fragile façades that give the city such soul. Also, the tile-clad cafés and restaurants are emptier and more intimate than in the height of summer.

#8. The Magnetic One: Brussels

Paris is the obvious head-turner, but Brussels has oodles of ooh-la-la. It doesn’t make an exhibition of itself, yet you’d be pressed to find a more exquisite heart to a city than the Grand Place, ringed by guildhouses and the Gothic town hall. Linked to the Lower Town by cobbled lanes, it’s almost too chocolate-boxy to be true. Ah, chocolate… If music be the food of love, handmade Belgian chocs run it close.

#9. The Alluring One: Porto

At the mouth of the Rio Douro, the hilly city of Porto presents a jumble of styles, eras and attitudes: narrow medieval alleyways, extravagant baroque churches, prim little squares, and wide boulevards lined with stately beaux-arts edifices. Porto’s historic centre is the Ribeira district, a Unesco World Heritage zone of winding lanes, zigzagging staircases and tiled churches peering around every corner.

#11. The Passionate One: Seville

Poet Lord Byron described Seville as ‘a pleasant city, famous for oranges and women’. It’s perhaps the most perennially elegant in Spain: fountains gurgle in quiet patios ablaze with geraniums and minarets, lending sensuality. Enjoying a meal, taking a walking, or flying a hot air balloon over any of these cities is enough to make even the least romantic people feel inspired.

#14. The Dreamy One: Siena

Siena’s Piazza del Campo is an aesthetic ante, creating today’s notion of romantic architecture. Renaissance turrets, 15th-century trade courts that echoe with lifetimes of mercantile buzz and streets begging you to wander a due, stopping for frothy macchiatos. By night, the Piazza is very come-hither – faces shine in the lamp glow of alfresco tables.

#15. The Poetic One: Biarritz

Romance is the raison d’être of Biarritz. This Basque town, framed by the Pyrenees and the Atlantic, was a humble port until Napoleon III came and fell for a girl twirling her parasol on the sands. The teenager became Empress Eugenie, and Biarritz was, overnight, the most fashionable resort in Europe: with grand hotels, Belle Epoque terraces and a taste for sensuous fun, it’s still a romantic heaven.

Together they compromise an area of 40,000 bed base and are 6km long, with a modern, lively and cosmopolitan atmosphere. The 50 individual pistes, served by 34 ski lifts that are able to uplift 36,520 snow sports enthusiasts/per hour, make the place a highly rated destination among all winter lovers. Crowned by the Plaine-Morte glacier, the vertical drop is a respectable 1524 metres.

Crans Montana’s main skiing is divided in to three areas although they are all well lift-linked to one another and by five different gondola lifts from various parts of the resort itself. The biggest is Cry d’Err , the second Violettes – location of many of the resort’s tougher runs, and the third Aminona above the purpose built centre of the same name.

Intermediate level skiers will find plenty to occupy them at all levels, particularly the long run down from the Plaine Morte glacier. There are some 30km of cross country trails, including a high altitude loipe on the glacier, and the Foulée Blanche race is staged in the resort each January.

The Silvretta Arena is one of the largest connected ski regions in Europe, with numerous lifts between Ischgl and Samnaun. Pistes stretch up to 2,870 metres of altitude into the mountains of the Silvretta. More than 90% of the excellent pistes and lift facilities are above 2,000 metres of altitude. This is also the reason for the skiing region’s extraordinary snow security. The winter season lasts from the beginning of December until the beginning of May.

Winter enthusiasts from around the world swear by Ischgl’s high standards as a skiing region, facilities and accommodation. Many believe that it is the best skiing region. Joyful gliding or intensive carving – in Ischgl you will find it all.

The 10 countries below are known for their various cuisine and always helpful locals.

#1. China

Thanks to the historical influence of Buddhism, China has a 2000 year tradition of pure vegetarian food. There are vegetarian restaurants in all the major cities and many smaller towns serving so-called “mock meats“, imitating the texture, shape and sometimes flavor of meat.

#2. Croatia

Vegetarian cuisine has never been one of Croatia’s strong points, but there’s usually enough to choose from on restaurant menus if you look hard enough. Vegetarians can often construct a lovely meal from the yummy grilled vegetables served as starters or side dishes, pastas with various sauces, mushroom dishes, and fantastic salads.

#3. Egypt

Egyptian restaurants offer a mixed bag of experiences for vegetarians. If you’re happy to go local and eat at cheap, no frills places then vegetarian food is plentiful. Mezzes consists of a number of small dishes like hummus (made with chick peas), baba ghanouj (made with eggplant), labneh (yogurt), foul medammes (mushed up broad beans), salads, pickled vegetables, olives and comes with a basket of freshly baked aish baladi (pita bread).

#4. England

For the large number of vegetarians and vegans in England, that must be one of the most vegetarian-friendly countries. The UK has a long tradition of vegetarian cuisine and the great number of vegetarian restaurants offer one of the world’s most diverse selection of dishes available, from good old fashioned vegetarian pub grub such as a vegetable crumble, Asian, Caribbean and Mexican through to London’s best gourmet botanical cuisine.

#5. Greece

Greeks eat more meat than any other Europeans, but on the other hand, eat more vegetables than other Europeans too. Like many other Mediterranean cuisines, there is a tradition of small dishes, eaten individually as appetizers or with drinks (mezes). Whilst there are some traditional vegan dishes served as main courses, the easiest way to eat vegan, and eat well, is to assemble a meal from the collection of mezes on offer.

#6. India

In India, an estimate of 42% of the population is vegetarians and a great part of them are lacto vegetarians: animal based ingredients (other than milk and honey) are not used in the traditional cuisine. Make sure you try malai kofta (the vegetarian alternative to meatballs), rajma (red kidney bean curry), which tastes great even when served with just plain rice, and aaloo parathas (stuffed flat bread served with chilled yogurt and your favorite pickle or chutney).

#7. Malaysia

The South East Asian nation of Malaysia is also a haven for vegetarian delicacies. Sure, you are going to have to order more than your fair share of char kway teow or mee goreng and tanpa daging (without meat). Malay food is all about spicy sambals and coconut curries, and has its share of interesting vegetable preparations like kerabu salad.

#8. Poland

Poland is known for its rich, meaty cuisine, but that does not mean, that vegetarians are out of place here . Every town is dotted with tiny produce markets and at least one large open market full of gorgeous fruits and vegetables. Most restaurants have at least one meatless option and cabbage is a popular ingredient in Poland. Vegetarians will be pleased with knysza, a pita filled with red and white cabbage, carrots, corn, a garlic yogurt sauce, and crunchy fried onions.

#9. Thailand

Lots of people assume that since Thailand is mostly Buddhist that vegetarianism is common among the people. However, Theravada Buddhism does not prohibit or even discourage the eating of meat except as a voluntary ascetic practice. But among the ubiquitous chicken, fish and tiger prawn local dishes, there is a host of vegetarian opportunities waiting to be discovered. In addition, the food in Thailand is very adaptable for different tastes, flavors and dietary needs.

#10. Turkey

Most Turkish dishes contain more vegetables than meat, but in the many stews and pilavs (rice dish), small amounts of meat may be used as a flavoring, so vegetarians need to choose carefully, but you won’t starve. Many stuffed vegetables will contain mostly rice. Make sure you get a taste of the local dolma (stuffed grapevine leaves), zeytinyagli (leeks with olive oil), pide and börek ( kind of fried or baked pastry filled with cheese or potatoes).
Top 5 Local Tipples to Taste Around the Worldtag:frugalnomads.ning.com,2013-12-27:3169359:BlogPost:2737032013-12-27T16:36:56.000ZVelimira Velikovahttps://frugalnomads.ning.com/profile/VelimiraVelikova

1. Guinness, Ireland

The first pint of dark-bodied stout with roasted barley and caramel flavour, comes from the brewery of Arthur Guiness in Dublin. Originating from the traditional dark-coloured porter style, the stout is one of the most popular beers around the world. It takes 119.5 seconds to pour the perfect pint, but it is worth getting right.

2. Absinthe, Switzerland

The precise origin of absinthe is unclear – this 74%, alegedely dangerous and addictive, alcoholic drink dates back to Ancient Egypt, where it was used as a medicine. The ‘Green Fairy’ gained popularity as a drink in late 19th century in France, particularly among the bohemian circles of writers and artists. Although it is usually diluted with water and the bitter anise taste softened by adding sugar (the traditional method is to place an absinthe spoon over the glass and slowly drip cold water through the sugar cube to disolve it into the absinthe), it is vilified for it’s opium-like effects – an inspiration for many artists such as Van Gogh, Ernest Hemingway and Oscar Wilde.

3. Burgundy wine, France

Burgundy is one of the most territory-oriented wine producing region in France – the 400 different types of soil give the wine grapes specific qualities and classifications are entirely geographically-focused.

There are only two people in the world who know the secret recipe for this 38% ABV flavored bitter. The chosen two are the only ones allowed to enter the Drogikamr room, once a week, and prepare the all natural mix of anise seed, cinnamon and about 32 other herbs. Becherovka is served usually chilled or with tonic water (a mixed drink know as beton i.e. concrete) and as a digestive. It may puzzle you, but in many former Soviet Union Bloc countries, it is used to cure arthritis.

The name “vodka” is a diminutive form of the Slavic word for water and in Poland, it has been produced since the early Middle Ages. In these centuries, the spirits have been used as medicines and among many, vodka was believed to “increase fertility and awaken lust”. It became popular as a drink in 1400. One of the best-known Polish vodkas, Żubrówka (Buffalo Grass Vodka or Bison Grass Vodka) is a dry, herb-flavored vodka that is distilled from rye.
Rugged cliffs plunge into the sea, to the north; a lush forest occupies the central areas and miles of white sandy beaches stretch to the south. That is the small Danish island – palette (588 sq.km), Bornholm, in a few words. The island might be small in area, but whether you choose to go there for a weekend or a long holiday, the tiny sunny islet offers a whole new aspect of Denmark.

A range of activities available for the outdoor lovers – climbing, horseback riding, sport fishing or golf. Art lovers won’t be disappointed either – the island is home to many artists and craftsmen and during the summer their studios and workshops are open to the tourists.

Earlier paintings can be seen at the Bornholm Art Museum at Helligdomsklipperne between Tejn and Gudhjem. It includes works by Michael Ancher, who is often associated with Skagen, but was actually born onBornholm and spent most of his time here. Danish painter Oluf Høst (1884-1966), who from 1929 lived on Bornholm, portrayed the island’s landscape and people in a very evocative way – he has got his own museum in Gudhjem.

There is so much to marvel at on Bornholm: Dueodde – the island’s longest beach, Svaneke – Denmark’s smallest market town (with the Council of Europe award for the preservation of its historic character), Paradisbakkerne – a hilly, rocky place about 2 kilometers northwest of Nexo, and not least the picturesque town Gudhjem and its subtropical climate, where both figs and mulberries thrive.

Many visitors to Bornholm choose to see the island by bicycle. There are approximately 200 km of cycle paths linking the major towns and attractions. Distances are short, and it’s easy to get around on the bike.

The advantage of bike tours is that you in good conscience can indulge in snacking, for there would be many calories burnt and many goodies to enjoy: Giant ice cream cones with jam, Danish blue cheese from the dairy in Klemensker, crispy crackers with cumin from the family bakery Johannes Dam & Son in Aakirkeby, smoked herring with rye bread and egg yolk.

Fishing is still, along with agriculture and tourism, one of the island’s main industries. But it has changed with time. A lot. Today, the island imports fish from other Danish ports to meet demand during peak periods.

It is said that in the Middle Ages, the Baltic Sea had been so rich with herring, that the boats found it difficult to get around. The first smokehouse was built in Gudhjem in 1886 and in early 1900, chimneys started to smoke in almost every village.

Today there are only about fifteen houses left, including the one in Hasle, which also has a smokehouse museum. They are open from April to September-October.

The Round Churches, a popular attraction on the island today, were originally intended as military installations. They were built in 1100 – 1200 and originally had a flat roof to facilitate defense. The cone-shaped wooden roofs were added later. Today there are four round churches left in the island: Ols Church, New Church, Nylars Church and the Baltic Lars Church which is the largest and the oldest.
10 Travel Destination Movies To Watch Before You Gotag:frugalnomads.ning.com,2013-12-08:3169359:BlogPost:1925102013-12-08T16:36:45.000ZVelimira Velikovahttps://frugalnomads.ning.com/profile/VelimiraVelikova

With its lush green pastures and orchards, Normandy remains a largely untouched paradise. With a wealth of unique attractions, it is a holiday destination that will entice you back time after time. The beauty of Normandy has inspired world famous artists, such as Pissarro, Boudin, Sisley and Monet, returning from all over the world to the region, that provoked their creative excitement.

Places to visit

Fighting in WWII destroyed many of the great medieval towns, but a few treasures still remain and make a trip to Normandy worthwhile, including the Abbey of Bec and Chateau d'Etelan.

Mont Saint-Michel Abbey is one of France's best-known attractions, situated on a rocky island just off the coast of Normandy and Brittany. It took nearly 400 years to built the granite marvel, that encompasses a range of architectural styles, from Norman to Gothic. The abbey was a place for pilgrimages for centuries and also served as a monastery, a prison and a fortress against the English.

The region has a proud and independent historical heritage and was one of the driving powers of medieval Europe. The Vikings conquered Normandy in the 9th century, further on it became a home to William the Conqueror who in 1066 defeated King Harold at the Battle of Hastings and started the great line of Norman aristocrats, still eminent in England.

The province is, however, probably best known for the Normandy campaign of 1944 when the Allies began their liberation of France and Europe from Hitler's Germany. On an early summer morning, 6 June, in 1944 the largest armada ever known left England's south coast and set off to liberate France. The events on that day, stayed in the world history as D day. Today veterans and their families walk along the same beaches codenamed Juno, Gold, Sword, Utah and Omaha. This historic event is commemorated in the region's most popular attraction, the marvelous Bayeux Tapestry.

It was here, too, in Rouen, that audacious Joan of Arc was burned at the stake at Place du Vieux-Marché (the Old Marketplace). The capital of Normandy is a popular holiday destination, and a centre of industry and commerce; it is the fifth largest port in France and the closest one to Paris, split into a right and left bank area by the River Seine.

Normandy is a home to the chic seaside resort of Deauville that Coco Chanel started a fashion renaissance opening her first boutique.

Honfleur is a small, but lively fishing port that escaped serious damage during the World War II Normandy landings. The charming town still functions as a fishing port and follows traditions dating back to medieval times, although it has lost its beach, due to the silting up of the river.

Cuisine

Today region is overwhelming abundance of local agricultural produce is greatly appreciated even by the fussy French palates. With 360 miles of coastline, Normandy inspires its chefs to be very creative with seafood - shrimp, crayfish, oysters, whelks and many many more, served with lemon, mayonnaise, and vinegar-shallot dipping sauces!

The region is also known, not for its wine, but for its ciders and apple brandy. Normandy is the best place to try Neufchatel, Livarot, Pont l'Evêque, Camembert, Brillat-Savarin, Boursin, Petit-Suisse and dozens more heart-shaped cheeses, from the local farmers' markets.

Where to stay

Staying in a private chateau, gite or chambre d'hotes is a great chance to experience the charm of the culture and live like a local, even fro a while. Rates can vary in different seasons, but the range is €10 - 15 per person per night.
Sunbathing elbow-to-elbow with strangers does not exactly fit anyone’s criteria for a relaxing seaside holiday. So next season, why not stay in one of your private holiday villas and enjoy a piece of coast all to yourself, family and friends?…

According to an international survey, the Danes are the happiest bunch of people on earth! Is it the eclectic mix of charming cobble stoned streets and cutting edge modern design, or the right to use the word ‘fairy tale’ freely (and most importantly, regardless of your age), maybe the country’s hundreds cycleways? Whichever you fall in love with, we are certain that you would embrace the egalitarian spirit and relaxed, cozy lifestyle of this maritime nation.

Denmark is also the cradle of world famous culture. The sea and the light in Skagen artists gathered in the 1800s that gave us the paintings we will never forget. Louisiana near Copenhagen is one of the world's foremost museum of modern art. And who has not heard any of Hans Christian Andersen's fantastic tales, such as "Princess and the Pea"?

Denmark is the Scandinavian gateway to Europe. The stereotype of the Dane as a cheerful person that does not turn down a beer or two in the middle of the day begins to be slowly but surely replaced by a more modern individual, with its great international success in music, fashion, design and architecture. But despite this, there is still another, more laid-back attitude in Denmark, which is the Nordic nations gladly describe as "continental".

Top Destinations

Both grown ups and children are attracted by the royal charm of Denmark. Legoland in Jutland, Tivoli Gardens and Zoo in Copenhagen is given a stop on the trip for all still young at heart. And the country's vast, flat nature settings are perfect for those who want to bike on vacation. Once a Viking fishing village, Copenhagen has evolved to become a major city and a very important port in Scandinavia and Europe. Home of the Little Mermaid and the Royal Family, Copenhagen offers numerous museums, galleries, and the world famous Tivoli Gardens.

In Denmark you will find that the distances are short – and this makes it possible to combine all the atmosphere of buzzing city life with the relaxation of the beautiful Danish coastline. Clean beaches and green forests are rarely more than a half hour’s drive away. And your children can roam freely and safely, while you explore all the many cultural and artistic offerings in store.

For those of you who admire Hans Christian Andersen, be sure to take a trip to Odense, his birthplace, and don't miss a visit to the Hans Christian Andersen Museum.

Jutland is a great place to visit for a relaxing, country style vacation and Aalborg is a good starting point for your trip - it offers culture and history in contrast to the green and leafy countryside. Aarhus is Jutland's largest and most vibrant city, known for its young nightlife. Be sure to visit the Student Quarter, with its great ambiance, cobbled streets and a number of unique shops.

Home of the original Legoland, Billund features quite countryside populated with some beautiful lakes and forests.

Bornholm is an island full of interesting history, several unique round churches and a romantic connection to the Knights Templar and the search for the Holy Grail. For many northern Europeans, however, Bornholm is considered one of the best holiday havens for cycling and fishing.

When to go

July and August are the best times to visit, as the climate is comfortable and most of the cultural events take place in this period. Also, there are fewer crowds in late August as it is end of the vacations. Winters can be harsh.
An Island-By-Island Primer to the Canary Islandstag:frugalnomads.ning.com,2013-05-29:3169359:BlogPost:1639592013-05-29T17:36:11.000ZVelimira Velikovahttps://frugalnomads.ning.com/profile/VelimiraVelikova

It is highly likely that once you’ve been on a holiday to the Canaries, you may be tempted just to set up permanent camp at one of the amazing beach resorts. Do so, but, but make sure you don’t miss to roll around the vast dunes of Gran Canaria‘s Maspalomas, enjoy the waterfalls of the delightful Los Tiles bioreserve on La Palma.

It’s all too easy to land in the Canary Islands and, taken by the feeling of the sun on your face and the breeze in your hair, hurry straight into an idyllic beach resort or quiet rural retreat, not to be heard from again until the morning of your flight out. Yet while we’re sunbathing, swimming, sailing, snorkelling and strolling, the ‘real’ Canaries are just in the background.

These seven islands were long some of the poorest regions of Spain, and only decades ago this territory was practically an afterthought to the mainland. The archipelago consists of five main islands - La Palma, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote – and the two, small untrampled islands of Hierro and Gomera. The islands are the peaks of a vast volcanic mountain range lying beneath the Atlantic Ocean.

The volcanic crater of Mount Teide is the major landmark of Tenerife. Teide is the third tallest volcano in the world and its 3,718m peak is the highest in the whole of Spain.

Lanzarote’s Timanfaya Park was declared a national reserve in 1974 and the island as a whole, which has one of the most extraordinary volcanic landscapes on the planet and is globally-protected by UNESCO biosphere.

Tenerife and Gran Canaria, at the heart of the archipelago, are the liveliest tourist resorts. Both offer frantic beach activity and an all-night party scene but get away from the most popular package holiday centres and you’ll be able to enjoy the islands’ wealth of natural beauty far from the madding crowds.

Gran Canaria is like a giant horticultural centre where thousands of exotic fruits, trees and crops flourish. There are banana and coffee plantations, fields of sugar cane and tobacco, date palm forests and orange groves. It stretches just 40 kilometres from north to south but offers dramatic volcanic mountains, tropical forests, desert areas and golden beaches.

Fuerteventura is the oldest of the islands and has the longest beaches in the archipelago. It’s not the place for all-night ravers but the island is a perfect holiday destination for families, couples and nature lovers seeking a relaxed winter sun holiday.
A Traveler's Guide to Nice: Insider Tips for Visitorstag:frugalnomads.ning.com,2013-05-06:3169359:BlogPost:2706262013-05-06T16:39:32.000ZVelimira Velikovahttps://frugalnomads.ning.com/profile/VelimiraVelikova

Have you ever been to Barcelona at Christmastime? Sure, sun and sandy beaches come to mind, when mentioning this name, but Christmas is very special for the Catalans.

Have you ever been to Barcelona at Christmastime? Sure, sun and sandy beaches come to mind, when mentioning this name, but Christmas is very special for the Catalans.

If you haven’t visited the city at this time of the year, do so – the temperature are high enough for pleasant stroll down the streets, full of lights. And there are loads of things to do in Barcelona. You can best feel the spirit of the festivities at Fira de Santa Llucia, the most traditional Christmas market in the city. Here you will find all kinds of Christmas stuff to decorate your apartment in Barcelona during your stay. And the decorations, oh, they are very…unusual.

The most typical Christmas decoration you can find in a Catalan home is the Caga-tió, a creature from the Catalan mythology. Caga-tió is a funny, smiley wooden log with decorative eyes, nose, mouth, legs and a Catalan hat on its head, that children poke with a stick. While poking the log, they sing a song to tell the Caga-tió to give them presents and then sweets fell out of its bottom!

Another traditional figure that you are going to find in every Catalan home is the caganer - a little shepherd having a poop in the bushes, in the Nativity. You will find all kinds of caganers in the Fira de Santa Lluciamarket. Apart from the classic shepherds, politicians, FC Barcelona players, and other celebrities (even the Pope), are turned into little caganers that you can buy to decorate your apartment in Barcelona.

You can find Christmas trees in Barcelona homes, as well. However, they aren’t usually very big and are often made of plastic, but always very well decorated. So, if you’d like a Caga-tió and a little man, taking a dump in your apartment on Christmas, Barcelona is the best place to be.

Tip: Go to the Fira de Santa Llucia, from the first Saturday of December to 23rd December, and buy this funny Christmas decorations for your apartment and live in a typical Catalan ambiance during your stay in Barcelona.
Strangest Food and Drinks From Around the Worldtag:frugalnomads.ning.com,2012-12-01:3169359:BlogPost:3338102012-12-01T01:52:49.000ZVelimira Velikovahttps://frugalnomads.ning.com/profile/VelimiraVelikova

Traveling to a new destination is about learning more about the culture, by getting to know the locals. And you will mix best with them, by trying to eat what they eat.
Traveling to a new destination is about learning more about the culture, by getting to know the locals. And you will mix best with them, by trying to eat what they eat. Unusual and different, trying these local drinks and dishes border with ‘extreme dining’ to many of us. Sure, we all get excited by trying something new and little bizarre, but read on and you tell us where you draw a line.

#1. Birds Nest Soup in China

A nest of twigs and leaves wouldn’t be edible, but the Swift’s nests, made of saliva are called ‘Caviar of the East‘. And even more, a kilo of the rubbery texture can cost between $2,000 and $10,000, making it one of the most expensive animal products, consumed by humans, with Hong Kong and the US being the two largest importers of birds’ nests.

#2. Fried tarantulas in Cambodia

Tarantulas are not eensy weensy house spiders, they are eight legged monsters you can buy everywhere on the streets of Skuon, Cambodia. And the black, hairy arachnids are fried whole – legs, fangs and all, cooked with a little bit of garlic and salt, crispy on the outside with a gooey body on the inside.

#3. Puffer fish in Japan

The deadly Puffer fish, also called fugu, is an ultimate delicacy in Japan. This dangerous fish can be prepared only only by expert chefs in licensed restaurant, because its skin and insides contain the poisonous toxin todrotoxin, which is 1,250 times stronger than cyanide, and there’s no known antidote.

#4. Balut in the Philippines

Almost as popular to the Philippine people, as hot dog to the American, the balut is in its essence a chicken fetus. They are cooked when the fetus is anywhere from 17 days to 21 days depending on your preference, although when the egg is older the fetus begins to have a beak, claws, bones and feathers.

#5. Casu Marzu in Sardinia

This Sardinian ‘rotten cheese’ is a very different type of Pecorino – riddled with the larvae of the cheese fly. The cheese has to be eaten when the maggots are still alive because when they are dead it is considered to be toxic, and s the larvae can jump if they are disturbed, diners have to shield their eyes or place the cheese in a sealed paper bag until the maggots are starved of oxygen and die. It’s now banned for health reasons but can still be available on the black market in Sardinia and Italy.

#6. Surstromming in Sweden

Surstomming in its essence is fermented Baltic herring, that can be found on supermarket shelves all over the country. The herring is fermented in barrels for one to two months before it is tinned, where the fermentation continues for another few months. Very often the cans often bulge during shipping, or even storage, because of the continued fermentation process and you can imagine the strong odor of fermented fish. No wonder certain certain airlines have banned these local treat from being taken on flights.

#7. Live Octopus in Korea

Called also Sannakji, it is a raw dish consisting of octopus pieces, chopped while the creature still alive, lightly drizzled with sesame oil and served immediately whilst the tentacles can still be seen squirming on the plate and wriggling around in your mouth.

And if you dare to try any of the above, then go ahead and wash them with one of these potions.

Baby Mouse Wine from China is rice wine in a bottle full of, well..baby mice. It is a traditional Chinese andKorean “health tonic,” a cure for everything from cold to liver problems. Preparation is very simple – little mice are stuffed alive into a bottle of rice wine, where they are left to ferment.

Seagull Wine from the Eskimo people, is another simple booze recipe: Put a seagull in a bottle. Fill with water. Let it ferment in the sun. Enjoy.

Snake Wine from Vietnam a drink with a difference. Yet, another rice wine, but with a different note. The snakeis left in the rice wine for many months to let the poison dissolve in the wine. The ethanol makes the venom inactive so it is not dangerous, and snake wine supposedly has many health benefits.
Art Attack!
Whilst there are many ways to satiate our travel-pangs, such as a cruise on the Celebrity Eclipse, for example, or a backpack trip around the world, there’s no better way than just going to a destination and exploring the culture of the locals for yourself. After all, you’ve all the time in the world with which to explore the rest of it, so take your time.

Madrid has long held a particular draw for those with the inclination to travel. Perhaps it is the Spanish culture, the people, the sights, or the language, but for one reason or another, millions of tourists flock to experience the city for themselves. However, one might ask just whatever exactly is it they experience there that makes it such a great place to go
to? Worry not, for here we have an extensive look at one (or three, depending on how you look at it) of the most sought-after artistic destinations in Madrid.

The Golden Triangle

In days gone by, it might simply have been enough to recommend going to the Prado art museum, however today that just simply isn’t the case.

One of the main attractions in Madrid these days is its fantastic collection of art museums, a leading triumvirate of which converge to form what is colloquially known as “the Golden Triangle” of museums, presumably because there are three of them: the Museo Nacional Del Prado, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina
Sofia.

Due to the extensive nature and content of the Golden Triangle it is wise to set at least an entire day or two aside for them, more so if you wish to view everything on offer.

The Prado

Or the Museo Nacional Del Prado, to give it its full glorified name, focuses primarily on classical art – of which its collection is extensive. The collection consists mainly of works by European artists and numbers somewhere in the tens of thousands, with any thousand or so of which are on display at any one time (as ten thousand in one go would be an impressive feat indeed). Expect to see works of Italian, French, Dutch, Flemish, and German artists on display, yet the chief draw would be the large collection of Spanish works on offer, which is worth almost a day in itself. A good idea would be to plan which artists you have an interest in viewing beforehand and then structure your visit accordingly.

Museo Thyssen

The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, which draws its name from collection-starters Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza and his father Heinrich, initially started out as a private collection and grew to over 1,600 paintings – the largest private collection in the world, after the British Royal Collection.

The Baron largely kept the art to himself and his contemporaries until his wife kindly persuaded him to graciously open up his extensive collection to the public. After searching for some time where to house the collection, the Baron opted for the Paseo del Prado, located near the aforementioned Prado museum itself.

The collection itself is incredibly varied when compared to the others in the Triangle, being known to house a variety of works from 14th century masters, examples from most historically important artistic movements, as well as pop-culture art from as recent as the 60s. The Museo Thyssen is certainly a grand day out for those with an interest in art that doesn’t revolve around a fixed point in history.

Reina Sofia

The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia is another must-see museum and the final stop in the Triangle. The collection this time mainly revolves around abstract art, containing works by Picasso, Dalí, and Miró, to name but a few. The museum’s collections of Picasso and Dalí in particular are worth mentioning, as they are both extensive and excellent, well worth the time, for anyone that has an interest in these two masters, or indeed anyone that has an eye for abstract art in the slightest.
Palma de Mallorca – A Small City in the Suntag:frugalnomads.ning.com,2012-01-09:3169359:BlogPost:3668482012-01-09T14:07:45.000ZVelimira Velikovahttps://frugalnomads.ning.com/profile/VelimiraVelikova

Visit the beautiful Catedral de Palma or just admire it from outside. In the evening, it is beautifully lit and dominates the city skyline.

Want to go to a museum? Then visit Museo de Mallorca, located in the mansion of the Earl of Amayans. The building was built in the sixteenth century, connecting several old houses, three floors high, with a main portal arch, baroque balconies and an attic with Gothic windows. The tour of the museum allows visitors to enter the tunnel of time and get to know the history of Mallorca. For example, in the basement provides for the reconstruction of a burial cave, full-scale reproduction of a pottery workshop. You’ll also find a number of carved marble urns from prehistoric times. It is located east of the cathedral and is well worth visiting. Do not attempt a visit on a Monday, however, museum is closed then.

The Old Town is located just behind the cathedral and is truly authentic. The lanes are narrow, covered with cobble stones and polished by the feet that have walked over them for centuries. Here you get the feeling that time has stood still. Make a stop at one of the old squares, have a cup of coffee or glass of wine and enjoy the street life.

Shopping in Palma: Brands and markets

Palma offers shopping in all price ranges, from expensive design stores to little local shops. El Corte Ingles is Spain’s major department store chain, two stores available in the city. Designer stores you will find on Avenida Jaume III street. and around Placa Major, the main square, there are lots of small streets with shops of all kinds. On Saturdays, you can visit one of the local markets, including the flea market at the cathedral.

Out and About in Palma

Take a glass of wine or a cold beer and some tapas – a great way to rest your feet while watching the people. A good and reasonably priced tapas restaurant is Taste, which is located on Carrer de la Unió, 2, not far from Plaza Mayor. Do not miss the Puro Beach – this is where the trendy Palma residents get good food, good drinks and friendly staff in a wonderful setting, with sea views. There are also great restaurants with outdoor seating at eastern port area. And if you walk further away to get to Portitxol, an old fishing camp, now a trendy area with many cafes, bars and restaurants. Going in the other direction, west of the harbor, you’ll come to what is called Passeig Maritim. Here are some of Palma‘s big night clubs and restaurants, and the famous luxury yachts.

How to get around

Bus is a great way to get around in Palma and if you want to go somewhere outside the city. Another option is to rent a bicycle and enjoy the fresh air, the sun and the fantastic coastline views. The easiest way to get around the city center is by feet. There are also “hop-on hop-off” coaches, where you can buy a 24-hour ticket and get a guided tour of the city. It is a great way to get an overview if this is your first visit to Palma.

How to get here

Palma’s international airport, Son Sant Joan, is 8 km east of the city. From the airport you can easily get to the center by shuttle bus for a few euros, or by taxi for about 20 euros.
A Guide to ‘Dirty’ Amsterdam: Looking Back Into the City's Pasttag:frugalnomads.ning.com,2011-12-20:3169359:BlogPost:3597372011-12-20T14:37:04.000ZVelimira Velikovahttps://frugalnomads.ning.com/profile/VelimiraVelikova

Amsterdam succeeds, in its little dirty, shameful but oh so irresistible ways, to get under the skin of the traveler, overpower and charm them so much, that they just have to go back. Time and again. Year after year. That’s probably because Amsterdam is a city that despite its small size is very cheeky and few cities can tickle the adventurer in you, such as this oasis of liberty.

Amsterdam is constantly evolving, everything is changing with a neck breaking speed here. Since the millennium, the city exploded with creativity in every sector – from design and architecture to fashion and gastronomy.

Looking at the map, it is probably difficult to understand the big role that the small country has played in world history. In fact, the little kingdom that you can literally cover with your thumb, has for a long time ruled the world.

Amsterdam‘s beginnings is anything but grand. The city made its first modest debut in the history books during the early thirteenth century when a group of fishermen settled a close to the Amstel River. Here were established the first Dutch dikes – an area that today is the center around the Dam Square.

The crafty “Amstelleddammers” developed a trade with the passing merchant ships, that consisted largely of beer and herring – something that the Dutch had a taste for, and learned to love over everything else on earth.Hollandse Nieuwe (raw herring fillet with chopped raw onions) is now the inauguration rite for anyone who wants to gain insight into the Dutch gastronomy.

Amsterdam‘s most famous area has existed since the 14th century. The name Red-Light District is owed to the small red lamps that visiting sailors placed outside the doors. Today, lanterns have been replaced by red fluorescent tubes, but the idea is the same. Curiosity about the area is great – the neighborhood is full of English party seekers, Italian couples and hordes of Japanese tourists who want to get a glimpse of the Dutch reality: the women behind the window, pay taxes, are connected to the trade and get regular health checks. But here you should fight to resist the urge to pick up the camera – all photography is strictly forbidden and punished.

During the second half of 15th century, the Netherlands, contrary to Spain, and especially Amsterdam were, a haven for all who would not join the Roman Catholic Church, and the influx of wealthy merchants saw that the city grow suddenly, not only in territory. In Amsterdam there was no requirement for your religion, as long as you paid taxes and contributed to the economic development of the city.

Both culture and commerce flourished and Amsterdam became the center of the world and a powerful empire with colonies including Indonesia and South Africa. Names such as Rembrandt van Rijn, Jan Vermeer and Jan Steen sat in the same time the city on art map.

Over the decades it declined, largely because of war and pest. During World War I the Netherlands remained neutral, but the country was hit harder during World War II, when it was occupied and almost its entire Jewish population was wiped out. A comprehensive document of that period is Anne Frank‘s diary, and her secret hiding place can be visited on the Prinsengracht.

During the sixties and seventies Amsterdam was invaded by hippies from around the world. It was undoubtedly the tolerance of so-called soft drugs that converted it to Europe’s “magic center”, completely sealed in the smell of marijuana.

And just what is, in my opinion, without a doubt one of Amsterdam’s finest qualities – to allow anyone to be who you want to be completely without pointers.
The Essential Guide to Venice: Hidden Secretstag:frugalnomads.ning.com,2011-12-17:3169359:BlogPost:3594792011-12-17T15:00:00.000ZVelimira Velikovahttps://frugalnomads.ning.com/profile/VelimiraVelikova
