From Syphilis,mercury and arsenic poisoning,an unprofitable coffee plantation,abdominal pains and panic attacks,a failed marriage and the death of a lover...yet Danish author Karen Blixen described Africa as a beautiful place,her stay in Kenya as happy.One of the portraits hanging in her old farm house (now a museum in the posh suburbs of Nairobi,Karen which was named in her honour) depicts a scrawny,hollow-eyed and ashen-faced woman. Inside, dark wood-paneling adds to the sense of gloom. The rooms contain more nostalgia than memorabilia: most of the original furniture is housed on the first floor of the McMillan Memorial library.Sadly,many of the pieces are falling into disrepair.
The knobbly knuckles of the Ngong Hills are visible from the living room window.Blixen's lover, Denys Finch Hatton,who was killed in a plane crash,is buried here.Outside,beyond the beautifully landscaped garden are the eerie,rusting skeletons of old farm machinery.
