fI was born at an early age and grew uo from there to spend 40 years on the Toronto Star - Canada's largest newspaper - as a staff writer/photographer. I now write freelance travel articles for Postmedia Network, Canada's largest newspaper chain. Go to WWW.CANADA.COM, punch Pat Brennan into the search window and you'll be flooded with interesting articles. I also fly a blog called TRAVELSWITHLEFTY.COM. It's got that handle because for more han 50 years I've been flying with one wing, as a result of a car accident when i was 19 years old.

New York State's Erie Canal Marks 200th Anniversary

It was sort of like the Internet of 200 years ago.



Thousands of men wielding shovels took 7.5 years to dig the Erie Canal and when the barges started moving, it greatly increased communication, trade, immigration and knowledge between America’s original 13 colonies and the Great Lakes – and on to the Midwest.
