South Pacific

I'm just back from 5 weeks in the South Pacific. Wow!

First half of the time I was volunteer teaching in a small elementary school in the picture-perfect island of Aitutaki in the Cook Islands. Beautiful people, stunning blue lagoon, unspoiled small-town feel to the island of only 2,000+ people.

Next I was in Papeete, Tahiti from which we sailed on the Aranui III for two weeks among the Marquesas Islands. Each island was different, amazingly enough, and each of the 180…

Shai Hills in Ghana

I had a couple of free days in Accra recently while winding up my month in Ghana. I decided to visit the Shai Hills Resource Reserve for a change of pace. By tro-tro to Ashaiman and then another one got me to the Reserve in less than 2 hours, a distance of 33 miles. I had booked a room at the Shai Hills Resort, supposedly 300 m. down the road from the main entrance. Actually, it's more nearly 1 mile, which I walked instead of waiting for another tro-tro. Hot!

I believe I was there 7 years ago and many years before that.  Yes, the water shoes are essential!  I am happy for you to have this experience.

All the best,

Sandra

If you love snorkeling, Atutaki is a great place to do it.  I went on a day long tour for snorkeling, swimming and lunch at 'One Foot Island.'  If you think of questions, please email me.  Of course, you will want to have lots of sunscreen!  It is a paradise.

All the best,

Sandra

Hi Dorothy,

It is great to meet you on Tripatini.  You are amazing and I hope to have your enthusiasm and energy in future years.  With regards to your question about the Cook Islands, I apologize but can not think of helpful information.  Atutaki is surreal in its beauty. I hope that you can snorkel while you are there.  Please let me know where you are volunteering.  I would like to do that also!  Perhaps you have specific questions and I will try to answer them.

All the best to you,

Sandra Kennedy

Good afternoon, Dorothy, and a hearty welcome to our site! It's great to have you with us -- and we think you'll find it productive as well as interesting and enjoyable.

To get the most out of us, you may want to take a few minutes to join several other of our many groups which you might find of particular interest, such as Florida, Volunteer Vacations, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Jordan, Eco/Sustainable Tourism, Eating/Drinking the World, and plenty of others covering many topics and most destinations throughout the world.

FYI, on your profile you'll see a blue bar marked "Text Box," which you can turn into a box containing not just text but also photos and even videos about yourself, your interests, your travels, and your writing.

Finally, if you would, please be so kind as to spread the word among your travel-interested friends, family, associates, and readers. It's fast and easy to use our "INVITE" function above left on the navigation bar to enter e-mails (even your whole list at once!).

Many thanks for joining us, Dorothy; we wish you an outstanding rest of 2009 and look forward to hearing more from you...!
