Benvinguts tots to the forum devoted to the places, culture, and language of the region that bridges Spain and the south of France, including Valencia, Andorra, the Balearic Islands, French Pyrénées-Orientales, and even part of Sardinia. And today in Catalan language news... piece in the NY Times about Catalonia's legislature about to approve a measure to require all foreign films be dubbed in Catalan. Good idea or now? Article.

Hey Carles! Nice to see you on Go-Lo. There's no link to the song by Lluciana Sari........... You know you can put the YouTube video clip directly in your message by simply pasting in the embed code, right? I just found a song by Lluciana on YouTube... is this it?

I attach a link to a song by the algherese singer Lluciana Sari. Although in the description of this group it does not appear, the Catalan language is also spoken in Italy, in Alghero (L'Alguer in Catalan), a town in the island of Sardinia.

I've found in keeping my languages up that music -- especially pop songs -- is a huge help, and so I thought I'd kick this off by offering "Temps era temps," one of my old favorites by Catalan singer Joan Manuel Serrat, who has also had plenty hits in Spanish. It's from the early 1980s, if I remember right, but I like the tune, and the lyrics do a nice job of evoking what Catalans and their culture went through under the Franco regime.

Temps era temps
que vam sortir de l'ou
amb l'or a Moscú,
la pau al coll,
la flota al moll
i la llengua al cul,
amb els smbols arraconats,
l'aigua a la font,
les restriccions
i l'home del sac.

Temps era temps
que més que bons o dolents
eren els nostres i han estat els únics.
Temps d'estraperlo i tramvies,
farinetes per sopar
i comuna i galliner a la galeria.

Temps d'"Una, Grande y Libre",
"Metro Goldwyn Mayer",
"Lo toma o lo deja",
"Gomas y lavajes"
Quintero, León i Quiroga;
Panellets i penellons;
Basora, César, Kubala, Moreno i Manchón.

Temps era temps
que d'hora i malament
ho vam saber tot:
qui eren els reis,
d'on vénen els nens
i què menja el llop.
Tot barrejat amb el Palé,
i la Formación del Espíritu Nacional
i els primers divendres de mes.

Senyora Francis, m'entén?
amb aquests coneixements,
què es podia esperar de nosaltres?
Si encara no sabem, senyora,
què serem quan siguem grans
els fills d'un temps,
els fills d'un pas orfe.

Temps d'"Una, Grande y Libre",
"Metro Goldwyn Mayer",
"Lo toma o lo deja",
"Gomas y lavajes"
Quintero, León i Quiroga;
Panellets i penellons;
Basora, César, Kubala, Moreno i Manchón.
