San Miguel Allende: What not to miss, safest transportation?

Would appreciate suggestions on what not to miss in the San Miguel Allende region.  Also, because of the problems in Mexico would like suggestions on the safest mode of transportation from the airport in Leon to San Miguel Allende.  Thanks.

There is so much to do in SMA!  Obviously the hisotirc center is a must as is La Aurora design center.  Bill Harris jewelry is amazing if your a maven and the multitude of cafes, shops and restaurants in the center.  The garden tours that leave from teh center are interesting to see behind the walls of some of the more beatiful homes.  Regarding transportation, the official taxis are fine in the BJX airport; however, there are also private transport options that can be arranged through your hotel or travel agent.
