Budget Travel

Making your buck, quid, etc. go further has never been more important in these times. Fortunately there are still tons of strategies for taking off -- whether you're a student, a senior, or somewhere in between -- without landing in the poorhouse.

Great deal in Quito, Ecuador, thanks to detective work by travel/food/design writer Jeanine Barone: Volunteer a few hours of work a day and get a free room, drinks, and 10 hours of Spanish lessons from the Secret Garden Spanish School in Quito. http://bit.ly/cKLrIG

A friend just turned me onto a pretty good ski vacation discount site http://www.vacationroost.com. There's a catch and that is they promise things like free days of lodging and skiing (pay for three, get the fourth free) but there's no words about free days of skiing on the site. You have to call the #. 888-337-6678

Here's another deal that's actually a good deal: The Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort & Spa, an all-inclusive resort on St. Thomas, is offering up to 50% off on bookings this fall.
The winter deals aren't quite that good but they're even more remarkable: some 30% discounts during Christmas break (they're assuming you can find a flight that week, which isn't necessarily easy). And after January 2, the Wyndham's offering a Winter Sale & Early Booking Bonus with 30 percent off all-inclusive rates for stays up to five nights and a 30 percent discount plus one free night for stays of six nights or more. http://www.sugarbaywyndham.com/

A lot of deals cross my desk. Most don't deserve your attention, but this one does -- a Day of the Dead 3-for-2 package at Hacienda Xcanatun on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula:
"Pay for 2 nights & the 3rd Night is Free, valid from October 30 through November 3, 2010. [This] reflects a 33% savings off normal pricing. The reduced cost for two adults staying three nights starts at $560.00 (plus taxes and hotel service charge). " It's a beautiful place, too.

The packages includes:

* 3 Nights (pay for 2!)
* Xcanatún Breakfast for two daily.
* A sampling of Mucbipollos at breakfast or lunch.
