The Kawa Karpo Kora is arguably the best all-round longer trek in Western China/Tibet and one of Asia's great mountain adventures.
Straddling the border between Yunnan and Tibet, Mt Kawa Karpo is one of the Buddhist world’s most holy mountains. Never climbed and worshipped as a deity, it is a remnant and icon of the ancient bon religion; an animistic tradition based on the concept of a world pervaded by good and evil spirits that inhabit forests, rivers and mountains. Every year thousands of hardy and devout Tibetans arrive to circumambulate the revered 6740m peak in one of the region’s most sacred pilgrimages. Following in their footsteps, the spectacular route offers a truly 'best of breed' adventure - one that is culturally immersive, geographically diverse and well off the beaten track. Furthermore, 2014 is the Tibetan Year of the Horse - said to be a particularly auspicious time for pilgrimage.
The 180 km route involves 11 to 12 days of trekking and passes through ever-changing altitudes from the 1800m Mekong River valley to the last of six ascents up the legendary Shola Pass at 4,810m. Joining the quest to purify a lifetime of negative karma is an amazing journey that takes us through ancient moss-laced forests, remote Tibetan villages, alpine meadows and panoramic mountain passes strewn with prayer flags and pungent yak butter.
The trip was researched, designed and will be managed by Whistling Arrow, a Hong Kong based adventure travel specialist. The trip will be lead by Adrian Bottomley, the company's owner and founder.
