When is a splurge worth it? Lots of times. Deciding to make our family travel experience budget-friendly or deluxe is to a certain degree a personal decision.

For me and many other parents, the long lines, muggy heat, and time-wasting boredom of just WAITING negatively affects the Orlando theme park experience. There are lots of tips out there for having a budget theme park vacation in Orlando, Florida, but this isn't one of them. If it can be afforded, make a trip to Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure in Orlando easier. Those lines are terribly long, and it's painful to watch little children get bored, scream and whine. Instead, stay at the Loews Portofino Bay Hotel at Universal Orlando; your room key lets you skip those nasty long lines and see less bad parenting all around you. Better yet, really splurge and get a VIP Pass package at Universal Studios Orlando. You get a personal guide who is yours for the day, and who helps your family completely skip the lines and see some of the behind the scenes action at the fun theme parks here. I recommend it for a totally fun and easy theme park vacation.

Let the kids plan a trip? The final chapter of Tim's Trip Planning 101 series is now online at The World on Wheels. He's been planning a baseball trip to Ohio and Missouri. Take a look at just what it takes to plan a trip with a wheelchair: http://tinyurl.com/y2zgny2

Amish farms, nuclear disaster sites, and an accessible steam train ride through the countryside. It's all in part 2 of our Pennsylvania Trip Report on The World on Wheels. http://tinyurl.com/y6jxw5g

We just set up an itinerary for Families who want to "wing it" in Ecuador. Includes bird-watching, zipline, volcano exploration and a day-long community service project. The price point is very affordable and includes most meals, with kid-friendly cuisine.

We are very excited to be participating in the Go Green Expo in Los Angeles later this month. Come by Booth #310 between January 22 & 24 at the Los Angeles Convention Center at 1201 South Figueroa St., South Hall J, and watch some terrific video of the eco-adventures we offer at Alderwood Retreat. Naturalist guided hikes, guided sea kayaking past bird rookeries and sea otter colonies, marine tours to see porpoise & whales, voluntourism projects like cleaning up our outlying beaches, historical & cultural tours, cooking classes, and SO much more are all available at our eco-lodge in the pristine Alaskan wilderness on Kodiak Island. This show is oriented by & for people who care about taking care of the environment, so there'll be lots to see! The first folks to e-mail us will recieve free passes into the show!!! Hope to see you there!
