Florida

America's top vaycay state is best known for its beach resorts and theme parks. But besides the ersatz thrills of Orlando, the nightlife of South Beach, and the well-marketed Victoriana of Key West and Amelia Island, quiet hideaways abound as well.

Yes it will be hot and you will be eaten alive by mosquitoes in the Glades in summer. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but there's no way to soft-pedal it. If you're still interested, I can suggest some outfitters. Many don't operate or cut operations in summer. Let me know if you're coming in from the East (Miami) or West (Naples/Fort Myers).

New query on our "Ask A Travel Expert" forum:

"Looking for South Florida nature tours suitable for family with 8 year old
Heading down to South Florida in late June for a week. We're a pretty outdoorsy family into hiking, kayaking, the whole outdoor thing, but we've never been to the Everglades. Is summer a totally horrible time to go out there? Will we be eaten alive by mosquitoes? Will it be too hot?

And we'd like to find a reputable, top-of-the-line but reasonably priced outfit to take us out there. Our eight yeard old son will be traveling with us. Also interested in other outdoor adventure possibilities in the area.

Any suggestions??"

So true, Vinnie. But I think what may be at work here is that it's easier and somehow feels more "right" to people to be afraid of the obvious things, like everyone instinctually was back in the cave days.

People in our state are afraid of the wrong things. Aligators, panthers. Try driving off when a vulture just ate your tires.
Up north in Jersey where I come from, people are afraid of bears, but they almost never attack people. Deer kill people. Car accidents, lymes disease, and then they eat your shrubs.

Interesting piece in the Miami Herald today about an unexpected danger in the Everglades: vultures munching on visitors' rubber and vinyl car parts! http://bit.ly/c19it7
