NEW TAXES ON FLYING

The Baltimore Sun complains about "Europe's relatively new national visitor levies designed not only for revenue but also to discourage air travel. The UK's "air passenger duty" is the worst: Starting November, it will hit travelers leaving UK airports on flights to the United States with a stiff duty of 60 pounds (about $96) in economy class and 120 pounds in any premium class, including premium economy. Ireland imposes a less onerous tax of 10 euros (about $14) and Germany appears about to assess a similar levy of 26 euros (about $36) on air passengers." How will these taxes affect your travel?

A lot of Berlin people are angry that the government, strapped for cash, has halted plans to reconstruct the Berlin City Castle, which was not so much a castle as a Baroque palace in the heart of the city. The reconstructed building would have been used for cultural purposes such as museum exhibitions, which would have been very good, but I have a question: Is Berlin better off with reproductions (as this would be) than with newly designed buildings?

I will be on assignment in Europe between May 10 and May 30 attending the Institute of Travel & Meetings Annual Conference at Chelsea FC, Stamford Bridge, London, England (May12 & 13) and the IMEX 2010 Incentive Travel, Meetings & Events Exhibition in Frankfurt, Germany (May 25, 26 & 27). I am looking to fill my schedule in the time between these two events (May 14-24) covering a number of business travel; meetings, incentives, conventions & events topics. I already have some tentative plans in Liverpool, London, Paris and Frankfurt – if anyone has any assignment suggestions or “must see” recommendations related to business travel or meetings, incentives, conventions & events topics please let me know…
