Everyone should make a pilgrimage to the Greek capital at least once, to see the birthplace of the Western democratic ideal. These days it's a big, noisy, vibrant city with lots of dining and nightlife options, but its main allure for the visitor remains the old Plaka neighborhood and the nearby Acropolis and Parthenon.

Visiting the Acropolis was an impressive experience, even with all the tourists wandering around. And that included the sculptures and artifacts in the museum up there. The museum structure itself, as I recall was pretty dunky and generally underwhelming. So I was interested to find out from my contact at the GNTO that a bigger, better New Acropolis Museum (www.NewAcropolisMuseum.gr) is slated to open exactly a month from now, for the first time bringing together not just the contents of the old museum but all the works that were scattered among other museums or moldering in storage. I'll definitely have to see about squeezing Athens into my travel schedule this year...
