Absolutely safe!
As long as you avoid Syntagma square in Athens (only whenever people demonstrate). Everything else in Athens is easily accessible by the metro lines and of course in this hot summer you can access the rest of the mainland and the islands without any problems.
I fully recommend ... The Acropolis (and the relevant museum) in Athens, Argos and Nafplion in Peloponnesse, the island of Santorini for the sunsets, the island of Ikaria for the alternative Greek entertainment, Crete, and the Simos beach in the island of Elefonisos at the east-southern end of Peloponnesse.

Strikes and demonstrations this summer and now a lockout at the Acropolois. When will tourists say the hell with Greece I'm better off going somewhere peaceful for my vacation. Is this where you'd go if you're only going to take 1 vacation?

My brother has hijacked my Tripatini account to post a question on Ask A Travel Expert about cruising in the eastern Mediterranean.
Please answer if you can; he's leaving on the cruise in just a week. http://www.tripatini.com/forum/topics/eastern-med-cruise-tours

Bloomberg News reports: "Croatian tourism, accounting for about a sixth of the Balkan nation’s economy, will grow around 5 percent this year as Greece’s crisis drives visitors north." Just how bad -- quantitatively -- has tourism in Greece been hit this summer?

They haven't backed down on this yet. According to the Guardian, "The ruling socialists have vowed to pay up to €70 (£58) a day to cover costs incurred because of strikes. "We are guaranteeing to pay any extra room and board any visitor in Greece pays," said the tourism minister, Pavlos Geroulanos. "Even if [they are] stuck here because of a volcano in Iceland."

The promise highlights the extent to which Athens will go to attract tourists; the sector accounts for one in five jobs in Greece and nearly 20% of its GDP.
