 Creating the Inland  Waterways Association which saved the British Canal network from closure and introduced narrow boating as a pleasure pastime to a then bewilldered post-war British public.
 As a prolific author, well known for his travel stories and biographies of famous engineers such as Isambard Kingdom Brunel and Thomas Telford.
 HIs role in launching the world's first heritage railway preservation society at Talyllyn, North Wales.
 As a founding member of the Vintage Sports Car  Club.
He was also instrumental in the development of industrial archaeology and advised on projects like the National Railway Museum in York.
