Just a bit of self-promotion - Sixthman currently produces music-themed cruises for fans of everything from doo-wop to country/folk to rock and roll! Check out VH1's Best Cruise Ever, Malt Shop Memories Cruise, Cayamo (with Lyle Lovett, Emmylou Harris, Steve Earl, Brandi Carlile, and more), and Zac Brown Band's Sailing Southern Ground. sixthman.net

We love bringing music lovers together and welcome any questions or feedback!

While in Jerusalem, I found a great store selling CDs (probably mass-copied in a back of a house) and stocked up on Umm Qulthum disks. For those of you unfamiliar with her (and her name, which means Mother Singer, is transliterated in many ways), she is Egypt's greatest singer. Rumour is that wars and skirmishes were planned for when she was not on tour. Four million people turned up to her funeral when she died in 1975, and her coffin was temporarily "kidnapped" and taken to what her followers believed was her favourite mosque. Some of my friends in the late 80s/early 90s had a London-based band, Flavel Bambi Septet, which covered her music. The band might still be going.
