I was heartbroken when The Figaro closed; Carol and I had brunch there at The Beginning. Thank heaven the chess shops on Thompson Street and Matt Umanov guitar shop are still there and still, stubbornly, unchanged by the times. Oh yeah, and Dante's below Bleecker St. Lemme see, what else?

Sadly, Ed, many of the great dives are gone. Even Chumley's. :( Some jazz clubs, mostly jazzed up, remain like The Blue Note, Village Vanguard (I think), and the ancient Arthur's Tavern on Grove. The fact that smoking isn't allowed robs them of a certain... patina (not that I'm arguing for abrogation of the law). The Bitter End, where you could see Bob Dylan and Dylan Thomas, ain't singing many sweet songs judging from my more recent visits, but still has ambience. They've all jacked up the prices, watered down the drinks... and the Village just isn't the Village, not at those rents.

I watched tonight's Yankees-Twins game at Thunder Jackson's on Bleecker Street, one of those Greenwich Village sports bars where sturdy, short-haired young businessmen eat burgers and cheer their teams on. And I wondered to myself -- and now to you -- where can you still find the old Village of Dylan and Peter-Paul-Mary and young Springsteen?

Pleased to announce publication of my new NYC app "NYC Free and Frugal" app for iPhone, iPad and iTouch, available at the iTunes store. More than 100 listings of shops were you never pay retail, cheap eats, free movies and theater performances, and other hidden gems that even many of us natives don't know about.

Question -- Since it is an electronic download, what would be the proper electronic word or phrase to replace "published"?

Now on the Tripatini blog: a tour of historic Woodlawn Cemetery in Queens, which even some of the living are dying to visit (well, at least temporarily).

Duke Ellington, Joseph Pulitzer, and the Whitneys knew this all long: One of New York City's greatest architectural gems is a cemetery: http://www.tripatini.com/profiles/blogs/a-tour-of-new-yorks-woodlawn

David, you might want to check out Fashion 26, Ink 48, Distrikt... Chatwal is getting big buzz but it's anything but funky. Let me know if you have time for drinks. :)

Waterfall was in lobby and on website when hotel opened in May. Have not visited recently to know if it's been removed from lobby as well as website.

BTW, is that the same Strand at this Web site: http://thestrandnyc.com? I don't see a waterfall in the photo gallery and if it had one I'm sure they'd make sure it was included.

Great lead, Evelyn, thanks! The interview is on BBC World News' Fast:Track program, but I'm not yet sure when it will air. When we know, we'll post it here on Tripatini. Thanks!
