Bloomberg: New York is No. 1 tourist destination in the country

The Big Apple was the biggest draw for tourists in the United States last year, Mayor Bloomberg said Monday, with the number of visitors falling only 3.9% despite the recession.

As prez of New York Travel Writers Association, here's my New Year's forecast for New York City.
2020--Manhattan's downtown marina posts signs, DO NOT FEED MANATEES.
2030--Immigrants from The Country Formerly Known as Mauritius settle in Battery Park.
2040--Prospect Park is engulfed by kudzu.
2050--U.S. designates Coney Island a new Federally protected reef.
2060--Mauritian-Americans relocate to Maine.
2070--Manatees follow.
Have I missed anything?

Just saw "New York I Love You" last night. Fab writing, fab dialogue, and visually, the movie is sheer poetry (and, to my taste, much better than the original "Paris, Je T'aime"). After 18 years in New York, this movie made me fall in love with the city all over again. I recommend it to all and sundry, but especially those who have doubts about living in or visiting the Big Apple. Fave stories: Julie Christie as a fading diva and Shia LaBeouf (who really needs to spell his surname à la française, LeBoeuf!) as the physically-impaired Russian bellhop she falls for; and possibly film's first love story between a Hassidic woman (Natalie Portman) and a Jain diamond dealer. But there were moments all throughout that were, er, gems.

Hi folks!
Susan Hartzler, Editor-In-Chief of DIY Doggie, is looking for properties to review in the new publication DIY Doggie. The premier issue will be live on the iPhone and iPod Touch with dedicated iTune's applications on October 5. They will add a travel section in the November issue reviewing hotels and resorts that are dog friendly. She's currently looking for a property in New York City to visit in October for the November issue. DIY Doggie will be available for download to 48 million people. If you have any suggestions, please post them here! Thanks!

Anybody up near Saratoga Springs this weekend? Don't miss the 2009 Saratoga Wine & Food and Fall Ferrari Festival, September 10 - 12 at our incredible Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC)! It's one of the events of the year (apart from all the horse races, of course!). The food & drinks are awesome, and maybe I can't afford a Ferrari, but it's fun to look!

This is a big anniversary year for the Hudson Valley, where I'm from -- the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's ship sailing up the river for the first time. And as one of the events, a new gallery has been opened at Olana, the quirky mansion of painter Frederick Church in Columbia County outside the city of Hudson. Great stuff -- now they've got an exhibit of Church's sketches of the Hudson from his estate, many of which haven't been seen by the public until now. If anybody's in the NYC or Albany areas, definitely worth a visit.
