These are fantastic courses... at a price... for the average golfer who wants to meet locals...rather than other tourists....I would highly recommend playing local town and village courses where you will meet the local members at very reasonable prices.  Balclutha Golf Club comes to mind as one of the friendliest and welcoming group of little ball hitters anywhere.

You're absolutely right, Koru: I asked the golfers which course they were referring to, and it was the one at Kauri Cliffs Resort.  They were pretty wild about the resort itself, too. They mentioned Cape Kidnappers Lodge as a good alternative if you don't have money to burn.

@Ed. I am sure you mean Kauri Cliffs Resort at Matauri Bay, one of the most beautiful resorts and lanscape of Aotearoa. I do regular tours up there to take golfers who are always blown away by the stunning golf course and lodge. This as well as Matakauri Lodge and Cape Kidnappers Lodge is owned by american Julian Robertson by the way.

On the subject of beverages....some excellent Pinot Noirs from Martinborough ( North Island) and superb Sauv Blancs from Marlborough (South Island)....

Glad you are being treated well Ed with plenty of stimulation and extraordinary Kiwi experiences....be sure to tell everyone about them...just as I tell everyone about the extraordinary experiences to be had in the USA. America does a very poor job in promoting itself as an exceptional destination for visitors/ tourists. We can't speak highly enough of its wonders and people. :-)

This is like discovering great seafood at a pastry shop: Went to Wild on Waiheke and tasted extraordinary pilsner beers brewed on the premises. Understand, Wild on Waiheke is a winery.

Another Kiwi special... possum socks....so comfortable... but you have to handwash them ...so i was only able to wear them once.....

Too bad, Tony; I've no time for fishing and no talent for golf. Some golfers who just joined us for the board of directors meeting played golf up the coast of the north island -- must resurrect the name of the resort and course -- and told me that it was more beautiful than Pebble Beach.

Remember to cast a fly for some feisty trout with the help of a local professional guide and hit the little white ball on a local club course. Kiwi flyfishing and golf are a must do....
