Pennsylvania

One of America's most historic states, it ranges from the urban flair (and grit) of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh to the bucolic beauties of the Poconos, Dutch Country, and Bucks County. And for history, don't you dare miss Philly and Gettysburg!

Hi Allie!

Sorry for my delay in responding - had the government shut down on Friday, the only thing that would have been closed would have been the actual battlefield grounds; the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitors Center (which is truly spectacular if you haven't seen it before) is managed by a separate group and would have remained open, as would have excellent locations like the David Wills House, etc. Luckily though, as we kicked off the official Civil War 150 at our State Capitol this morning, there was no shutdown to be had! Check out www.pacivilwar150.com for all the details!

I just posed a question on another group that pertains to Pennsylvania. If the government had shut down Friday night, would National Battlefields like Gettysburg have been closed for the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War?

Superbowl Fake-out:  Perfect day to visit the Carnegie, Frick, & Warhol museums in Pittsburgh. Ditto, the National Aviary.

Can't answer your question, Allie, but I did see an astonishing deal in eastern PA this morning: Hotel Fauchere in Milford is offering $5 comfort food entrees between 3 & 6:30 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays. MInd you, this is a Relais & Chateaux.

"Carnegie Museum of Art director Lynn Zelevansky thinks can become an international contemporary art center ."  One of my children just sent me that. I must confess that I do not really know the western part of our state because it is so large and varied. Could Pittsburgh be a new world art capital?

Now it says on a comercial that you can HIRE the Mummer's string band. And an announcer said that January29 Darlene Love and The Dupres and the Platters are performing in Phillie. I wish I was there end of Jan.

I'll go out to a nice restaurant with the family tonight. Its out last night out in Penn. before we go back to FLA.  And tonight I bet we won't need reservations. We're watching the Mummer's parade right now on the tube and its a hundred times better than it was years ago. Net year we'll go there in person God willing. If your home turn it on!

"Athough Jan. 1 ends with a quiet evening, it is Saturday night. What will you do... tonight?"  That's a question on the New York City group, but for those of us in Pennsylvania this weekend -- whether you're in Philadelphia or Erie County or anything in between -- what's on today?

I have watched the New Years Day Mummers Parade since I was a little, often in person by going with my family to Broad Street. But even after all these I always look forward to seeing it. If you're not lucky enough to be in Philadelphia for this early burst of Mardi Gras costumes and music, watch it on TV. You'll love it!
