Beautiful portraits, found in an Egyptian oasis called Fayoum, date back to the 2nd century AD. The ancient Egyptians used to place them on top of the deceased's face. They bear the likeness of the dead to guide their souls to the physical bodies. See them at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
