6 Enchanting Destinations Not to Miss in Japan

The Land of Rising Sun. is endlessly fascinating, with its bamboo forests, serene temples, neon arcades, futuristic skyscrapers, and exquisite cuisine, not to mention ultra-polite people. A fascinating mix of highly traditional and cutting-edge modern, it's on many travelers' bucket lists. But with so much too see, where should you head to make the most out of your visit?

Kyoto

If you were had just one day in Japan for a destination of your choice, make it Kyoto. Famed for being in many ways the country's cultural hub, this city showcases all the aspects of the country, modern or traditional, here. You will be able to spot bright-colored kimono-clad geishas, wooden tea-houses, gold, scarlet and silver temple, Zen gardens, bustling markets with intriguing ingredients, beautiful tea ceremonies, and so much more.

Tokyo

Japan's capital is pretty much the opposite of Kyoto. The ultramodern, crowded area with traffic always about, and the array of modern food (a lot of it vegetarian), this city will overwhelm you with sensory overload. From themed cafes to cos-plays and go-karting, there is always something ‘happening’ going on in Tokyo. While it does not house the traditional beauty and history of everything Japan, unlike Kyoto, you shouldn’t skip this city on your trip.

Takayama

You will love Takayama. Period. It is a small town that is out-of-the-world gorgeous. The Japanese Alps surround the town like a blanket and the traditional wooden houses, colorful shrines, brightly colored bridges, immaculately manicured trees will send you in throes while appreciating the visual beauty. Try Mitarashi-Dango while here, which is basically rice balls grilled in soy, and visit Hida Folk Village.

Hakone

Hakone sits close to Mount Fuji - the iconic landmark in Japan you dare not miss. Often hidden by clouds, the mountain is pretty elusive. Easy to reach from Tokyo, Hakone offers many great ways to witness the miracle near lake Ashi that is Fuji. You can do a loop of the view on trains, buses, cable cars, and even a pirate boat! It will be better you buy a Hakone Loop pass to save money and time. If you want to stay here for a night, book a tatami in a ryokan - a traditional Japanese inn- for a night well spent.

Kanazawa

While it is a beautiful city, not many tourists visit the area. If you want to tour geisha districts without the constant buzz of tourists, you should visit Kanazawa. Wooden buildings that are centuries old along with a stunning castle and well-kept gardens will make your trip more memorable. Also, there are many art museums that you can explore. Speaking of gardens, visit Kenroku-en Garden which is one of the top 3 gardens in the country.

Nara

As Japan’s first permanent capital, Nara holds a special place as a tourist spot in Japan. In all holiday packages from India to Japan, there should be a mention of Nara at all costs. It has many UNESCO world heritage sites and stunning temples. You should pay a visit to Todaiji temple in Nara which houses a 15-meter tall gold and bronze statue of Buddha that dates back to 8th century.

And finally, for travel between more than a couple of cities, don't forget to get yourself a Japan Rail Pass to save more money.
