I don't have kids and I haven't been a fan of Disney since I was wee little thing, but I was pleasantly surprised yesterday when Disney's Vero Beach Resort introduced me to their pirate-themed dining experience during a special preview. No doubt, the pirate dinners are fun for kids and the kid at heart in us grown-ups, too.
Before the meal begins, a costumed cast member asks diners to participate in a fun ceremony. All those standing must pledge to be good pirates. But the buck doesn't stop there: table and place settings, as well as the walls, are festooned with pirate accessories. Pirate music accompanies diners on the sound system, including the
Disney classic, Yo Ho Ho Ho, A Pirate's Life for Me. The best part: Goofy and Donald Duck show up as pirates.
Food includes hearty BBQ fare, served family style: pulled pork, ribs, grilled chicken, baked beans, corn on the cob, cornbread and coleslaw.
Disney's Vero Beach Resort is located on a quiet stretch of A1A just behind the dunes of one of Indian River County's many beautiful beaches.
You don't have to stay at the resort to enjoy its pirate dinners, which are served at Shutters, one of the resort's restaurants, every Monday from Memorial Day to Labor Day and select dates throughout the year. Call (772) 234-2180 for reservations and inquiries.
Below, watch some friends and in our pirate initiation. I visited the resort as part of my Trail of the Pirates travel series.
