Being located in a remote destination the jail is a true solitary confinement where no prisoner could be able to talk with the other.
Foundation & History of the Jail
Even though the Andaman and Nicobar Island were used by the Britishers soon after the rebellion of 1857, the construction of the cellular jail started in the year 1896 which continued for about 10 long years and finished in the year 1906. The jail came into use for the first time after the 1st independence war for the country which went against the Indians with the Britishers winning the fight. To suppress the freedom fight hundreds of people were brought to the jail for lifetime exile. According to the history and the past records of the Indian freedom fight, in the year 1868, about 238 prisoners tried to escape where 87 of them were caught and hanged. The solitary confinement being isolated with water the prisoners had no other option than to stay in the place facing the brutality of the Britishers. The prisoners who were brought to the jail were chained and was forced to work in different constructions sites, harbors and in the prison so as to make Andaman a place worth living or in short to colonize the place. The British administration later suggested the idea of “penal stage” in the prison sentence given to the prisoners so that the freedom fighters at the place face more harsh treatment while in the jail for a short period after the extradition of the jailers to Andaman.
Design of the Cellular Jail
The construction of the cellular jail was one hard thing. The jail in real had 7 straight wings with each of one connecting to the tower that was constructed to the center of the jail. The whole look of the jail was something more similar to a bicycle wheel with all the different wings attached to the central tower. The tower that was constructed to the center of the jail was supposed to be the watch point to the jail from where the guards would get a clear view of the jail and the places around. One of the main attractions of the jail was a large bell that is mostly used to raise alarm. Each wing at the place had three stores which were constructed in such a manner that the front portion of one wing would face the back side of the other wing. here the construction is in such a manner that one inmate in a cell could not be able to contact or see the other at the adjacent wings the construction was so isolated that the prisoners in the same wing also cannot see or communicate with each other. Each sells in the wing housed only one prisoner and the place ensured minimal communication and complete isolation from one another. It is mainly this way of construction that gave the jail the name “Cellular”.
