Boavista - West Africa's Isle of Turtles, Beaches & Dunes

Cape Verde
is an archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean that thanks to its climate, beaches and landscapes is becoming a first-rate tourist destination.

Boavista is the largest island of the Cape Verde archipelago, originally colonised by Portugal off the coast of Senegal. It is one of the Windward Islands, with never-ending virgin beaches which are an infinite succession of white sand dunes, with coconut and palm trees to make a perfect postcard. This is the perfect island if you want to indulge in the isolation of the beach and the ocean. There is so much sand that you will never have to compete with anyone for a place to lay your towel on the sand. And if you enjoy windsurf you are surely aware that this is one of the most interesting places in the world for this sport—the ocean and the wind team together to give you the perfect boost. The dunes are perfect for travelling along the beach in a dune buggy - an unforgettable experience.

Diving in the sea in Cape Verde, particularly in Boavista, is a plunge into magical surroundings of natural beauty, crystal-clear water, warmth, and sea flora and fauna. And Boavista is the second most important place for the reproduction of the caretta sea turtles, an opportunity that you should not miss if you visit the island in the right season.

And you can’t leave Boavista without trying out the langostada. Lobster is delicious and can be broiled, boiled or served with a natural broth. This delicacy is one of the specialties of Boavista. Cachupa is another typical dish, made from marinated tuna or pork, corn, beans, carrots, tomatoes and spices. It takes a while to prepare this delicacy but one you try it you’ll understand why people love it so much.

Whether you are an adventurer or prefer to indulge in the calm of the sea, you’ll fall in love with the island of Boavista. With an area of 620 square kilometers, this dry island has a special charm that will make your trip unforgettable.

Of interest: In Cape Verde, sea turtles lay from 100 to 500 eggs, which take around 50 days to hatch. Just 1 or 2 out of every 1,000 hatchlings survive. Fish and birds eat the tiny turtles, and as a result there are people who have established associations to raise them in ponds until they are big enough to fend for themselves.
