Things to do on Lantau Island, Hong Kong
Lantau Island, home to Hong Kong International Airport, is often bypassed by tourists for the more known activities in Kowloon and Hong Kong Island but there are great thing to do on Lantau.
1. Cable car: For an amazing views ride the Ngong Ping Cable Car for 25 minutes enjoying the view of the island, South China Sea, Hong Kong International Airport, and the green rolling hills of Lantau Island. Below catch a glimpse of the hikers who are making their way along the trail on what is a three-hour hike to the Giant Buddha.
2. Tian Tan Buddha: The Giant Buddha is the world’s largest seated bronze Buddha. At over 100 feet in height it towers over the countryside offering fantastic view of the island. Climb the 240 steps up to the Buddha who sits upon a lotus flower. There are several statues around the Buddha making offerings to the Tian Tan Buddha. Visit the Po Lin Monastery near the steps leading up to the Buddha.
3. Tai O Village: The fishing village which is home to the Tanka people seems to be frozen in time. Most have built their home on stilts about the along the river leading to the sea. Fishing is the main occupation as is readily evident by walking through the market where live fish and dried fish bladders are just some of the items offered for sale.
Visiting Lantau Island can be done independently but a tour with Splendid Tours eliminate some of the walking and climbing plus is more time efficient. Tours are available from Kowloon but to really enjoy Lantau Island book a stay at the beautiful SkyCity Marriott.
