(San Francisco, Calif. – January 8, 2014) Girls That Roam is an official media sponsor of the first-ever Women’s Travel Festival happening in 2014.

Women are getting out into the world. Women’s travel in the U.S. is one of the fastest growing markets in the travel industry raking in a potential of more than $19 trillion annually with an estimated 67 million girl roamers, according to experts.

A significant number of women travel solo or with their best gal pals. An astounding 57% of women surveyed revealed that they travel solo at least 25% of the time, and 17% do so nearly all of the time, according to Mary Beth Bond of The Gutsy Traveler.

The girlfriend getaway market represents $200 million annually. Within the past three years, 24% of American women have taken a weekend getaway with the girls and 39% of American women plan on escaping with their best girlfriends in the next three years, experts say.

Girls That Roam confirmed these numbers with its Women’s Travel Survey 2013 published earlier this week. Girls Roamers, what Girls That Roam calls our readers, are traveling all over the world. Age, ethnicity and sexual orientation are indefinable for these gallivanting women in their 30s to their 60s when they are traveling. They are just as much into visiting family and friends when they vacation as they are into exploring new destinations or simply getting away for a little romance with their main squeeze. They are smart, savvy, carry nice purses and have the latest technology to share their experiences.

A whopping 83% are passport holders and another 7% are in the process of getting their passport. They are interested in international travel as well as any location that is warm and has a beach to relax on. Cultural destinations, such as New York and San Francisco, are where they want to spend their long weekends soaking in great restaurants, museums, theater and more. “Because of the diversity of women traveling solo, with their best gal pals, or as couples and future women explorers, it’s important to support events, such as the Women’s Travel Festival, that bring women travelers new and well traveled together,” says Cassell.

The one-day event focused on women’s travel will take place 10 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. in New York City at the Angel Orensanz Foundation for Contemporary Art on March 8, 2014.

Attendees will explore traveling solo, traveling in the Middle East, traveling safe, queer women’s travel, voluntourism, as well as tricks to score cheap flights, revolutionary travel apps, getting the best exchange rate and much more.

The event is produced by the founder of the Go! Girl Guides Kelly Lewis and her gallivanting team.
