Gardens and parks offer great relaxation both for mind and eyes, and the lovely city of Porto in northern Portugal has them in spades. Four of the top choices:
Jardim de António Calém
On Rua das Sobreiras, the must-see Antonio Calém Garden is a small but full of bushes, trees, and lawns, at has a lovely location on the banks of the river Douro, and is famous for its romantic view over the river. Other highlights include the monument to the 1415 expedition of Ceuta and the high black poplars. Locals come to play sports here, too. It's easily reachable by bus and tram.
Jardim do Passeio Alegre
On Rua do Passeio Alegre, this park - one of the biggest in the city - was designed in the 19th century by famous German architect Emíle David. It includes a small, romantic chalet, two Nasoni obelisks, and a granite fountain. You can also play golf in here.
Parque da Cidade
The biggest park not just in Porto but all of Portugal, Parque da Cidade (top, literally "City Park") covers 80 hectares along the Atlantic coast. It's also a fairly newish park, designed by famous architect Sidónio Sparrow and after years of planning opened to the public in 1993. Both traditional and modern design techniques were used, to result in a lovely natural look. There are trails, lakes, various animals, aquatic vegetation, reflecting pools, groves, and spacious lawns. It's considered one of the 100 most notable works of the 20th century built in Portugal.
