I wish I’d known about The Real Japan when I was traveling in Asia. Instead, I tried exploring this fascinating destination on my own and ended up nearly in tears – OK, actually in tears – when I couldn’t figure out the street signs, the menus, or pretty much anything else. In shear frustration, I signed up for a tour that took me to a series of touristy sites, and I left the country knowing I really hadn’t seen Japan

Since then, I’ve learned about Eric Demay and his company The Real Japan. Eric and I are on the same page when it comes to Authentic Luxury and "being a traveler rather than a tourist." His background includes working at Amansara (the Aman Resort in Siem Reap, Cambodia), where he learned that true luxury does not mean an overly opulent lobby, but rather a sincerely caring staff, combined with opportunities to meet local people for authentic experiences while being accompanied by the best guides.

After four years in Cambodia, Eric moved to Japan with his Japanese wife and joined The Real Japan - a high end travel company, specializing in private, tailor-made journeys. They focus on providing not only visits to the major attractions in Japan, but also (and especially) unique experiences. These include private tea ceremonies, visits to renowned artisans in ceramics and lacquerware, and dinner with real Geishas. An interpreter-guide is always on hand.

If you are considering a sojourn to Japan, take a look at The Real Japan and perhaps ask Eric (eric@real-japan.com) for a list of experiences his company can organize.

Remember, Authentic Luxury Travel is fun for us and good for the world.
