Itapuã is a legendary beach in Salvador de Bahía, one of the last before the city´s perimeter was extended to Lauro de Freitas, which is famous for being the great bohemian stronghold of the 70s. Vinicius de Moraes and the great Bahian singer-songwriter Dorival Caymmi both sang about it. Caetano Veloso also paid tribute to it in his beautiful song Itapuã, with the lyrics: “She was my guide when I was happy and young”.

Praia Itapuã has calm and warm waters, crowned with reefs that keep the waves low and the water peaceful. It is ideal for effortless bathing, without having to fight against the waves or violent currents.  It is a delight to stay up with friends until twilight having a few chilled beers in one of the bars near the Itapuã lighthouse, with the city in the distance on one side and the lighthouse turning a reddish color as night falls on the other.

Set among hundreds of palm trees, which the locals call coqueiros, Itapuã beach is one of the most popular relaxation destinations with the residents of the Bahian capital. They also head for other beaches such as Barra, Río Vermelho, Pituaba or Amaralina, which stretch as far as the so-called Third Bridge.

This beach is further characterized by its rock formations which, when the tide goes out, become natural pools which are perfect to swim in. They are perfectly safe and have very white and clean sand.

"Itapuã" means “snoring rock” in the language of the local Tupian people, due to the fact that there used to be a rock which, when the sea hit it, emitted a sound very similar to snoring. Unfortunately we can no longer hear it because the rock has broken.

It is important not to confuse these beaches known as Itapuã, which are situated in the city of Salvador de Bahía, with other beautiful beaches, also called Itapuã, but which are located in the state of Santa Catarina (further south).

Iberostar as far as I know stays at Praia do Forte, which is about two hours drive from Itapua' Beaxh. I do not see the connection between Praia do forte and Itapua' Becah
