Shanghai Gearing Up to be China's New Art Destination

For years now, Shanghai has played second fiddle to Beijing's art scene. In a valiant attempt to change this, Shanghai opened two new museums during the October 1st National Holiday to much hype from the art world.

The 2010 World Expo's China Pavilion has been turned into the China Art Palace, Asia's largest art museum. The iconic red structure will house 27 exhibition halls of classic art from China and around the world.

Another renovated structure from the World Expo has been turned into the Power Station of Art, a contemporary art museum that is currently housing the 2012 Shanghai Biennial until March 31st, 2013. The building was previously the Nanshi power station, a major polluter that has been turned "green" and offers a massive space for large art pieces.
