Swimming & Diving Among Giant Sea Turtles in Akumal, Mexico

Located 120 kilometers south of Cancun, Akumal is a place of virgin beaches with crystal clear water, natural areas and hundreds of turtles that thrive in this area, protected by national authorities. Akumal is one of the calmest places on the Mayan Riviera, 37 km from the Riviera's main city, Playa del Carmen, and the preferred place for those seeking to enjoy nature and the quiet conditions, ideal for diving.

It is as easy to see sea turtles in Akumal as it is for turtles to see humans swimming near them. By this we mean it’s relatively easy to see them, but it is important to do it responsibly. It is advisable to keep a safe distance from the turtles, just for the sake of taking care of them and nature. This means we should not even think of touching them (never), and we should especially keep away from them when they surface to breathe. Just imagine how stressful it can be for turtles to feed and breathe surrounded by people. Another important rule we must follow when sighting turtles is not to remain near one for more than a minute or two. We can look at a turtle for a short period and then move on in search of another one or any other species without bothering any individual turtle for too long.

In the bay the use of life jackets is mandatory. This is a way to prevent swimmers from going underwater, keeping them floating on the surface so that they don’t disturb underwater life. Another important rule is not to use sunscreen, and if you do, just make sure it’s biodegradable. The problem with sunscreen is that it accumulates in waters that are not easily renewed within the reef and harms marine life, including turtles. In Akumal there is plenty of shade under the coconut trees on the beach, so you can manage without sunscreen if you are thinking of swimming.

This is a wonderful experience you’ll never forget!

Complete your excursion: Akumal also has inland cenotes, especially one connected to the sea just three km from the bay—you can go there walking. It is the incredible Yal-ku cenote.
