Are you stuck for ideas on what to do with your kids when half-term starts? Here are some things you could consider doing to keep the little ones busy:
‘Frozen’ the pop-up experience
Are your children fans of the popular Disney film Frozen? Then they may enjoy this show. Take your kids on a trip to Arendelle itself and enter a magical ‘Frozen’ winter wonderland. Princesses Elsa and Anna provide musical performances and visitors can dance, sing and play around the stunning frost-inspired decorations and light effects. There’s also a pit of actual snow where you can build a snowman, and you can also take your kids to visit the Princess Parlour for a makeover.
Waterloo has an underground theatre festival with a family-friendly world of fun in Mini Vault, with acts and performances lined up to entertain under-11s. Three whole weekends jam-packed with music, comedy, circus and theatre as well as free activities to enjoy like dance, crafts and hula hooping. The event kicks off with a free of charge circus performance from Pirates of the Carabina, then a family-friendly race from Big Fish Little Fish. Check out the Mini Vault website for more information as well as how to book.
You’re probably very familiar with Peppa Pig if you’ve had preschoolers in your home within the last 10 years. The piglet is up in five-minute slots of appealing 2D which toddlers absolutely love. In the February half-term there is going to be a porcine picturehouse charge as the Pig family is shown on the big screen for the first time ever. Kids can sit back with their snacks for the new 15 minute special ‘The Golden Boots’, as well as reruns of the popular episodes and clips including Channel 5’s ‘Milkshake!’ presenting the show.
The kids make the decisions at the Southbank Centre yet again this February as the two-week children’s festival makes its return. The 2015 show will have plenty to keep your kids busy, including theatre, film, music , dance and comedy readings from some of the UK’s favourite authors. There will also be a panel of children from schools around south London explaining how they’d spend the day as prime minister.
Getting Away from it all
Don’t forget the option of leaving the city and finding somewhere to take a break. There’s some great holiday cottages with hot tubs in Suffolk, not far from London and a short drive. The countryside offers lots of great experiences for kids such as petting and feeding animals, the space to run around and more.
This is a day full of outdoor games and activities to keep the kids entertained during their half-term break. Using magnifying glasses, kids aged from 8-11 can explore the wintry and glorious patterns in Hyde Park during colder months. They will also get the chance to build a large outdoor sculpture using natural materials and create clay habitats for mini-beasts that reside in the park. Be sure to book early.
Out of this World Activity Mornings
Kids can become stargazers with the Royal Observatory’s astronomers this half-term to learn more about asteroids and dwarf planets in morning workshops. The sessions are for those aged 5 and over and include three short workshops, a planetarium show and entry to the Royal Observatory’s North Site as well as the Meridian Line. Be sure to book early.
