For most people, Pingyao is far off the radar when planning a trip to China. But this little town packs a big historical punch. It is one of China's most well-preserved ancient towns and for history buffs it is a treasure trove of ancient China.

The city wall of Pingyao, while not as large as the Xi'an wall, has not been altered since the Qing Dynasty except for a small portion near the north gate which was reinforced recently. A walk along the wall offers amazing views of the jumble of alleys and traditional courtyard structures that make up the town.

During the Qing Dynasty, Pingyao was the financial capital of China. Today, visitors can see the ancient banks and money exchanges which are mostly preserved as museums. In addition, the old Qing-era government offices are great to explore.

The China Guide offers tours to Pingyao which can be added to any customized China tour. Guides are available in English, French, German, and Spanish. All tours with The China Guide have no shopping, are customizable and offer an authentic look into local life in China.  For more information, visit http:/www.thechinaguide.com/ or email book@thechinaguide.
