Hi,

Would like to visit Amalfi Coast for 9-10 days in Sept: Capri, Positano, Sorrento ~ 9/13-22. Would like names of 4 Star hotels or excellent 3 star hotels.$175- 250/night. A/C a must. Modern rooms also. We would like Weber Ambassador, but they apparently have only one room left that has no view.

Any suggestions for airlines, itinirary would be great. We look, don't ride bikes or hike.

Should we rent a car, or is driving dangerous?

Restaurants?

Amalfi is beatiful. However roads are very narrow to get there along the Neapolitan coast. In the city itself you do not need a car because thr city center is relatively small. Normally you get there flying to Neaples and get a transfer there either privately through your own hotel tranfer

We were in all those places three years ago and did not need air conditined rooms since the night temperatures are pleasant.  We took a train from theTermini station in Rome to Naples, stayed there a few days with side trips to Pompey, Herculano and other places.  Naples is a very interesting city and has nice neighborhoods, especially the Old Town (visit San Genaro Church) and the Piazza with all the government buildings.  It;s a hilly town, so you will find many "city tram-escalators"  The Archeology Museum is one of the best in the world and you can spend a whole day there.  Then took a ferry and stayed two days in Capri/Anacapri.  Glorious seafood.  Back on the ferry to Sorrento.  A walking city but not much to do there.  Then a bus to Amalfi (the city) which was our base in the Amalfi Coast.  Better not to drive a car since the roads are very narrow and you will find very few parking spots in those small villages.  Spectacular bus rides from Sorrento to Amalfi and up and down the coast.  You can easily spend 4-5 days there going by bus to all the surrounding places (coast and up in the mountains alike).  Then bus again to the train station in the city south of Amalfi and the train to Rome.  A memorable trip!

David,

Our team visited Naples and Ischia and had great feedback. See the following for their impressions and photos:

Romeo Hotel, Naples - http://luxurytravelreview.com/2010/09/07/charming-hotel-made-our-st...

Hope that helps!

I would stay in Sorrento -- easy access to ferry to Capri and to buses to Positano and Amalfi (also Ravello, don't forget Ravello).

Check out the Bellevue Syrene in Sorrento -- and definitely eat at the restaurant once while you're there.

You can get from Sorrento to Naples by train (ask at your hotel -- they can tell you how to get to Pompeii if that's your pleasure). I think you can do without a car for this one . . .

Buon viaggio!

I would recommend the following hotels in the Sorrento area:  Hotel Bristol, Hotel Majestic Palace, Oasi Olimpia and Villa Garden Hotel.  You could consider the following for Positano or Praiano (Amalfi Coast):  Onde Verde Hotel, Casa Angelina, Hotel Marincanto.  I would recommend staying in Sorrento and/or the Amalfi area and visiting Capri as a day trip via high speed boat from Sorrento.  I do NOT recommend renting a car and driving yourself in this area as it is very congested and narrow, windy mountainous roads.  There is a good public bus system in the area, but I would also consider a private driver for part of the time if it is within your budget.  You can easily take a train from Rome to Naples.  There is a regional train from Naples to Sorrento, but you need to be careful of crime in the train station area - okay if aware and not traveling alone.  I specialize in travel to Europe, primarily Italy and France, so if you would like some assistance, please contact Jan Acorn, Gateway Destinations, 888-429-1242, www.gateway-destinations.com.  I work with wonderful local guides, cooking schools, wine tasting, etc.

These are the properties listed on our site. See if any of them work.
