No drop-off fee for rental car from San Francisco to Seattle?

Can I find a car rental that won't charge me the fee for picking up in one city and dropping off in another?

It depends on which cities you want - many city combinations don't have one-way drop fees.

Thrifty doesn't seem to charge a drop off fee for LAX to SFO, although there are all the usual airport fees, taxes, etc. Check out thrifty.com .

Drop fees are a bit of a confusing area.  Yes, it's true that Dollar & Thrifty do not charge drop fees, but they just bundle the fee into the the base rate, while others like Hertz lower the base rate and add on the drop fee.  The bottom line is that all that matters to the consumer is what will it cost to drive the car away from the rental lot.

The key way to keep rental prices in check, and especially one-way rentals since they can be prohibitively expensive, is to find the best discount and/or coupon code to lower the rate.  Sometimes you can save 10%, other times you can save 80%.  It's truly amazing what a good discount code can do.  The challenge is figuring out the right one.

That's where AutoSlash.com comes in handy.  Make a reservation anywhere you like, and then go to their website and track the rental (click on the tab labeled 'Track a rental you've booked elsewhere').  AutoSlash will analyze it, trying hundreds of coupon and discount combinations to find the lowest rate.  It's free, so you really can't lose.
