From Panama City Beach, Florida Facebook page, July 12:

Robin Cooper Hale "Just got back from Panama City Sunday night. We was there thru July 3 - 11. It was beautiful. We had the best vacation ever. Beautiful hot weather, white sand, and the water was the clearest it has been in years. No seaweed.....at all. It was sad that the beaches didn't have alot of people on them, because ...of the talk of oil. THERE IS NO OIL ON PANAMA CITY BEACH...........ONLY THE SMELL OF SUNTAN OIL. It is still one of the most beautiful beaches around. Our family loves to eat at Scooners, Pineapple Willys, Margaritaville, and Spinnakers. Me and my husband went dancin at Spinnakers several times and had a great time. Alot to do, but a week goes fast. Just been back a few hour, and were ready to go back." about an hour ago

Fewer Tar Balls, Patties Show Up on Coast’s Beaches
by Michael Newsom

"South Mississippi emergency management officials said Sunday they were receiving fewer reports of tar balls over the last few days, but some expect increasing threats of oil on the shore.

In Hancock County, Emergency Management Director Brian Adam said tar balls were being cleaned up on the county’s shores on Sunday. The tar balls have been rolling ashore in the area from the Silver Slipper Casino to the Waveland Pier, Adam said.

'It has started to slow down some,” Adam said. “It was a steady stream of them, but not quite as many as the last couple of days.'

In Harrison County, Emergency Management Director Rupert Lacy also said he had been seeing decreased reports of tar balls and tar patties on the shore over the last few days, but he said the expected shift in winds could bring more oil ashore over the next few days. Lacy said reports of tar balls have continued to come from the Long Beach and Pass Christian areas over the last few days and some others were found on the shore near Treasure Bay Casino Resort in Biloxi."

Donna Tucker "Just returned from a 10-day beach trip to Destin. It was absolutely beautiful. We had one afternoon of seaweed and one morning of rain. The other 8 1/2 days were wonderful!!!!! Water was crystal clear. Very rough with strong currents the first few days but calmed down the second part of the trip. Thank God no oil ...in Destin. I hope and pray it stays away from this beautiful place. For all of you trying to decide if you are going or not, GOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Don't let the media mess up your trip." 8 hours ago

From Gulf Shores/Orange Beach Facebook page, July 11:

Lori Reese Ralph "Got to Gulf Shores yesterday and ran straight for the beach! The water was warm and the sand was pristine. We swam again this morning until we got hungry. If I hadn't heard all about the oil and cleanup, I wouldn't have known anything had affected these waters. I've not seen or smelled oil. I am so glad we came!!!" about an hour ago

From Pensacola News Journal, July 10:

"The Escambia County Health Department on Friday lifted the health alert for the water at Johnson Beach.

The water quality in the area has improved considerably due to the reduction in bacteria levels, according to the Health Department.

Additionally, the department issued health alerts for the water in two Escambia County areas due to the potential for high bacteria levels.

The department advises against any water-related activities in Bayou Texar at Bayview Park and Bayou Grande in Navy Point south of Gibbs Road."

Terri Sparks Wood: "Does anyone know how it looks at Seaside beach and Racq. club in Orange Beach?" about an hour ago
Alabama Gulf Coast: Hi Terri! All the reports we've received today have been good. The current NOAA forecast has shown the oil has made a slight westward shift in the last few days, which has given our area a much-deserved break from heavy oil impacts. YAY! :)))" about an hour ago

From TravelingMom.com:

"Are the Grand Isle Beaches Open?

So are the beaches of Grand Isle open or closed? The answer apparently depends on your interpretation of the words 'beach' and 'open.' Tamara Augustine, park manager of Grand Isle State Park, and the park’s website say the beach there is closed.

But Josie Cheramie, Grand Isle’s tourist commissioner, and the message on the phone at the Grand Isle Tourism Office, say the island’s beaches are open.

The beaches may be technically 'open' but visitors shouldn’t expect to get in the water.

Visitors can go on the sand but they must stop at the 'tiger boom,' which has been placed in an attempt to keep the oil from washing up on the beach, Grand Isle Councilmember Leoda Bladsacker, said.

'The beach is closed from the tiger boom to the water,' she said. 'You can’t get in the water but the rest of it’s open. There’s probably 100 to 200 feet you can play with.'"
