From CuriousAboutOurCoast.com (Pensacola, Florida CVB), July 9:

"Beach conditions: Aerial reconnaissance Wednesday showed no oil from Pensacola Bay to Perdido Pass, including Pensacola Beach. Forecasts are for winds and currents to move oil in the Gulf of Mexico westward and projections are Escambia County beaches will remain largely oil free for the next several days.

Little Sabine will have normal opening and closing operations over the Blue Angel weekend. The boom will be closed on incoming tide but opened for traffic in the absence of oil. On the outgoing tide, the boom may be left open if oil is not present.

All gulf beaches in Escambia County remain under an Oil Impact Notice that will stay in effect until beaches are no longer impacted by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The notice is not in effect for inland beaches along Pensacola and Escambia bays or for bayous. Gulf beaches are open and swimming is not prohibited but swimmers are advised to avoid coming into contact with oil, whether in the water or on land."

From Press Register (Mobile, Alabama), July 9:

Weekend Oil Spill Forecast: More Oil Coming Ashore West of Mobile Ba
y

The latest forecast from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration shows winds and currents continuing to push oil ashore in areas away from the Florida Panhandle and west of Mobile Bay.
Weak and variable winds today are expected to become southwest at 10 knots overnight, then continue to be from the west or west/southwest at 10-13 knots (11-15 mph) over the weekend, pushing oil ashore on shorelines west of Mobile Bay...

...Potential new shoreline oiling in the area between Southwest Pass and Caillou Bay.

Further to the west, no oil has been observed west of Atchafalaya Bay since Monday, the NOAA forecasters said. Models suggest westward currents in this region will begin weakening over the next few days, though scattered tarballs may continue to impact Texas shorelines until eastward flow resumes."

From Panama City Beach (Florida) CVB Facebook page, July 8:

Rachel Thorp Tolve "I just got back from Panama City Beach today and I did not want to leave. The ocean was beautiful and no sign of the spill. I really feel for those who make their living off the tourism. Go visit! It was gorgeous and the food and people were wonderful!" 16 hours ago

From Sun-Herald (Gulfport/Biloxi, Mississippi), July 8:

"Inquiries for quotes on golf packages are down 25 percent, said Kevin Drum, executive director of Mississippi Gulf Coast Golf Association, which promotes golf tourism in the three Coast counties.

'We were going to get back to pre-Katrina numbers this year,' he said.

Instead he’s seeing far fewer than the normal 30 to 50 requests a day for quotes on golf packages; some days he gets none.

The loss to area golf courses, hotels and restaurants will be $12 million if the industry waits until spring to file claims for lost business, he told the BP representatives.

But with a few hundred thousand dollars, Drum said he can take pre-emptive steps to bring golfers to South Mississippi.

He thinks most of the existing customers will return, in part to support the Coast golf courses. It’s the new business he’s worried about.

'They’re going to go somewhere else and they’re not going to come back,' he said."

From Pensacola News Journal, July 8:

"Pensacola Beach was off to a slow start today, with fewer beachgoers than usual despite the pleasant weather and the fact that far less oil has washed up the past couple of days than in recent weeks.

Crowds are expect to arrive soon, however, with the Blue Angels flight demonstration team taking the skies over Casino Beach for practice at 2 p.m. today. A full dress rehearsal is set for noon Friday, with the annual Pensacola Beach Air Show kicking off at noon Saturday."

From Facebook page of Florida Emerald Coast CVB (Destin, Fort Walton Beach, Okaloosa Island, Mary Esther, Cinco Bayou), July 8:

Vanessa Kay Hebert "I think it's definitely hit or miss...but yesterday we picked up a few tar globs (size/shape of a kidney bean) with my son's shovel and smooshed them up just to be sure (and snapped a few photos, too). Also had some of the orange/brown spots on my son's white swim shirt. I think you also have to be specifically looking for them since they ... See Moreare hardly noticeable. We haven't been to the beach today so hopefully that is not the case today. I am not trying to be negative (just sharing what we found), as we are having the time of our lives and can't wait to come back. I have to say the beach is STILL absolutely beautiful, the water is crystal clear, and that it wasn't enough to make us want to leave or keep our kids out of the water. Going back tomorrow for our last full day and hopin' for the best!" 2 minutes ago

From Alabama Gulf Coast CVB Facebook page July 8:

Valerie Long Southard: "We have been down here since June 30th. Beaches are beautiful, water is great, a little rough past few days but got in it anyway!!! It's hot and absolutely beautiful today. Just got back from the Pier where it was picture perfect! So sorry the media is over exaggerating the oil spill effects!"

Governor of Florida says the oil is moving west now.

"On Day 80 of the Gulf oil spill aerial reconnaissance flights today covering an area from Pensacola Bay westward to Perdido Pass and eastward to Pensacola Beach reported no sightings of oil.

Tar balls, tar patties and sheen continue to be reported in Northwest Florida, though fewer impacts have been observed due to westward-moving winds and ocean currents.

Continued impacts will be possible in Northwest Florida over the next 72 hours, likely in the form of tar balls and tar patties. View the Florida Gator Interactive Oil Spill Map.

Forecasts are for winds and currents to move oil in the Gulf of Mexico westward and projections are Escambia County beaches will remain largely oil free for the next several days.

All gulf beaches in Escambia County remain under an Oil Impact Notice that will stay in effect until beaches are no longer impacted by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Bad news to me a Florida resident!

(Reuters) – BP dampened hopes that it could plug its leaking Gulf of Mexico well sooner than forecast on Thursday, while a battle between the U.S. government and the oil industry over a deepwater drilling ban heads to court.
BP stuck to its August target to complete a relief well to halt the worst oil spill in U.S. history, after a press report raised hopes the company could stem the 80-day-old leak sooner.
