From BusinessWire, Sept. 14:

Travelocity Offers Hotel Discount on Gulf Coast Travel
Company Hopes to Entice Sun-Seekers with an Exclusive Promotional Code GULF10

"As part of its Travel for Good program, Travelocity has become the first online travel company to offer a promotional code that gives consumers special hotel discounts in the Gulf region. The exclusive code allows consumers to save 10 percent on two-night-or-longer hotel stays in Florida, Mississippi and Alabama when travelers book with any American Express® Card. This ten percent savings is on top of the already great hotel deals found at www.travelocity.com/oilspillinfo.

“We hope this additional discount will inspire travelers to visit the Gulf and see the truth for themselves – that the beaches are clean and open for business”

A recent Travelocity study found that misperceptions abound regarding the oil spill and its actual reach. However, the same study found travelers could be lured to the region with a good deal. “We hope this additional discount will inspire travelers to visit the Gulf and see the truth for themselves – that the beaches are clean and open for business,” said Alison Presley, manager of Travelocity’s Travel for Good program. “With plenty of warm weather in the weeks ahead, now’s a perfect time to use the promo code and enjoy everything the Gulf region has to offer.”

When the devastation of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill was first being felt, Travelocity worked quickly to launch its Gulf Beach Guarantee, giving travelers peace of mind about visiting the Gulf Coast. By booking hotels covered by the Gulf Beach Guarantee, consumers can receive a refund for all unused nights if a government agency closes a beach within 20 miles of their hotel before or during their trip. Plus, the company vowed to notify its customers immediately if the beach near their resorts closed.

Now that fears about visiting the region are calming down, Travelocity decided to take a new approach to beckoning sun-worshippers back to the Gulf’s legendary beaches. The new Gulf travel deals page offers consumers budget-stretching savings at more than 40 hotels in the region.

In addition to promoting tourism to the region, the company held an employee donation drive to benefit the Gulf as part of its Travel for Good® program. Dedicated employees collected clipboards, laminate sheets, sunscreen, gas cards, water bottles, backpacks, bug repellent, hats, pens and more to help the National Wildlife Federation build response kits for oil spill volunteers."

From Pensacola CVB Facebook page, Sept. 8:

"Unfortunately, we’re still seeing some periodic effects on our beaches due to oil with tar balls sometimes being found in the water and sand. Any disruption to visitors is minimal as workers continue to monitor and clean the beaches daily. There is no health advisory from the EPA or local health officials. NOAA has opened all waters off our shores to fishing. Our waters are safe for swimming, and our beaches are beautiful and open for visitors to enjoy."

From Pensacola News-Journal, Sept. 7:

Crowds Return to the Beach for Labor Day
by Kimberly Blair

"Tourism on Pensacola Beach limped along during a summer defined by the BP oil spill disaster.

But on Labor Day, the last hurrah of summer, beachgoers turned out in droves on Pensacola Beach for the first time since the Blue Angels air show in July.

...'This is the best day of the summer so far,' said David Glover, owner of the snowcone kiosk at Pensacola Beach Gulf Pier. 'But one day won't make
up for what happened this summer. But it's great to see people come back.'

By some reports the Labor Day weekend was on par with last year's holiday weekend.

For the first time all summer, many hotels sold out, including Holiday Inn Express, thanks in part to a BP-funded voucher program that provided up to
$300 in American Express gift cards to people who booked rooms through Sept. 30."

From the Press-Register (Alabama), Sept. 6:

Editorial: The Summer of the Oil Spill Can't End Too Soon

"...Happily, merchants and hotel managers said tourists were heading in large numbers to area beaches for this three-day holiday. Mother Nature appeared to be cooperating, much to tourism officials’ relief.

If the folks who visit Mississippi’s and Alabama’s resort communities for Labor Day will return home to tell friends and families that the beaches are clean, the waters are open for fishing and swimming, and restaurants and boutiques are up and running, then word will spread and the tourism industry will get a much-needed boost.

That’s the good news.

The bad news is that the tourism-related businesses in this region usually make the bulk of their money from mid-May through August. And this year, those months were a bust."
