From Pensacola News Journal, Aug. 17:

Oil Spill: 'Our Beaches Are Clean and Safe'

"Based on water analysis from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and current and projected oil impacts, the notice has been lifted on
Pensacola Beach and portions of Perdido Key between the state park and east entrance to Perdido Unit of the Gulf Islands National Seashore.

Analysis of water samples by the Florida Department
of Health and DEP indicate that levels of oil are
within safe standards. In addition, scientific analysis
determined that sand that is visibly clean is also free
of oil and its related chemicals, county officials say.

...The Oil Impact Notice remains in effect for the rest of Perdido Key, west of the state park to the state line and all of the Gulf Island National Seashore
property in both Perdido Key and Pensacola Beach."

Taylor Hicks and Courtney Cox
An old colleague of mine in Alabama tells me they've been hired to do endorsements of the Alabama coast. Do people really know who they are? And how effective is a "celebrity" endorsement like this in counteracting a serious p.r. problem?

Network TV Special Highlights Mississippi Gulf Coast
One hour TV Special for Oil Recovery to be taped at Coliseum
By Krystal Allan

"The stage is set for stars like David Hasselhoff and American Idol's Taylor Hicks to perform Tuesday night at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi. It's all part of a one-hour television special airing on the CW network August 27th. The hope is to send the message that the coast is open for business in the months following the oil spill.

Monday afternoon, it was lights, camera and star power as pop artists like Drake Bell took the stage. Joining Bell were Disney channel stars Chris and Kyle Massey, country artist Ricky Skaggs and American Idol's Ace Young.

...During the special, people will experience the Mississippi Gulf Coast as the stars take excursions to the beach, Ship Island and catfishing. But, most importantly, through their experiences, they'll tell the stories of people on the coast."

[Florida] Resorts Offer Deals to Counter Oil Fears
by Jay Clark

"...Some destinations are offering deals -- some subsidized by British Petroleum -- that they hope will salvage the season, especially now that the oil well has been capped. Those deals are on top of the usual bargains found here in late summer and early fall, when the state's tourist traffic traditionally slows.

...Nancy Hamilton of the Lee County Visitor and Convention Bureau in Fort Myers...said a surprising number of prospective visitors still believe oil is coming ashore in her region.

Actually, no oil from the Gulf spill has ever reached the Florida coast east of the Gulf/Bay County line in the Panhandle, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

...tourism entities are mounting promotional pushes to bring more visitors here in late summer and fall. Beaches of South Walton, which received $1.6 million from British Petroleum to use on promotion, has a new program under which anyone who books three nights or longer for a stay by Sept. 30 at participating hotels will receive a $250 gift card for shopping at the huge Silver Sands outlet complex or for future travel on Southwest Airlines.

Lee County CVB, with $500,000 from BP, is continuing its promotional efforts to attract more visitors, as are the Florida Keys.

...Hilton Worldwide, for one, is keeping its Beach Satisfaction Guarantee in effect to Sept. 30 at its Florida hotels at or near a beach, even though the likelihood of oil hitting the beaches is now minimal. It provides refunds and waived cancellation fees for guests negatively affected by the oil spill. WaterColor resort in the Panhandle created its Worry Free Vacation as a result of the oil spill and it's still in effect. Orbitz, the online booking agency, has extended its Open Beach Guarantee though Sept. 30. For those who book through Orbitz, it provides refund of unused hotels nights if a government agency closes or declares a beach dangerous within 20 miles of one of the 240 participating hotels.

The deals and discounts that every hotel and resort offers at this time of year come in all shapes and sizes -- everything from reduced room rates and/or resort credits to percentage-off deals on restaurants and spas and/or lower or complimentary greens fees. A good number of lodging deals provide a third or fourth night free when a guest buys two or three nights. Of special interest to Floridians: Many properties offer special resident rates."

From Pensacola News-Journal, Aug. 16:
by Kim Blair

"...While tourism officials search for ways and money to do oil-damage control for the image of Pensacola Beach, an advertising campaign launched by DeLuna Fest organizers for their music festival Oct. 15-16 may be doing the job already.

The Gulf Breeze-based company launched a $735,000 advertising campaign that includes: a television commercial that's running in 19 states, including key drive-in markets of Birmingham and Montgomery, Ala., Atlanta, Gainseville, New Orleans and Tallahassee; radio spots in out-of-market stations; and national, local and regional print, outdoor and online ads."

Alabama State Waters Scheduled to Be Fully Reopened to Recreational Fishing
by Jeff Dute

"The remainder of Alabama state waters, including north of the Fort Morgan Peninsula, 3 miles into the Gulf of Mexico and Pelican Bay, will reopen to recreational catch-and-keep fishing at 6 a.m. on Monday.

The area north of the peninsula will also be open to commercial shrimping, while the state's offshore waters and those in Pelican Bay will remain closed to shrimping until adequate numbers of shrimp can be provided for testing, said Maj. Chris Blankenship of the Marine Resources Division."
