Turkey has so much to offer her visitors: breathtaking natural beauties, unique historical and archaeological sites, steadily improving touristic infrastructure and hospitality. But as any country, just started to emerge as a tourist hot spot destination, Turkey is full of mystique, and that mysticism is often riddled with myths.
#1. The locals use camels as the main form of transport
Certainly, in some parts of Turkey, camels are widely used, but don’t expect to find a camel parked up outside of the hotel entrance waiting for me.

Not anymore. Contrary to the public opinion that Turkey is a great bargain, it is very expensive.
#3. The water is dirty and will make you sick
Drinking the Turkish water could upset your stomach but this is only because the water has extremely high amounts of calcium compared to the water in foreign countries.
#4. The capital of Turkey is Istanbul
No it is not. Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey however the capital is Ankara.
#5. Turkish men have more than one wife
This Ottoman harem practice was outlawed over 80 years ago.
#6. Locals drag you in to the shops
You will still find owners that stand outside to entice you into the shop or restaurant, but about two years ago, the government acted on complaints.
#7. Turkey is located in the Middle East
No, the country actually stretches over the small southeast corner of Europe and a great part of Asia.
#8. Turkish people are Arabs
The majority of Turkey’s population is, well, Turkish, and they originated in the vicinity of Altai, in Central Asia.
#9. Women have to cover their heads in public
No, they don’t. Nor are they required to bow down, worship or walk 10 steps behind a man.
#10. Turkey is a barren, underdeveloped or desolate land
No, in fact, it is the sole country on this planet that is fully self-sufficient.
