Pets are one of our most precious possessions and often, our closest friends. Well trained dogs make great hiking companions but dogs are not allowed on the wilderness trails of Yosemite National Park.

Although dogs are allowed in the park and can be in designated campgrounds the National Parks are not exactly dog friendly, there are so many restrictions that dogs can't really be dogs.

If you want to hike with your dog visit the National Forests just outside Yosemite National Park. There are miles of dirt Forest Service roads & trails available for you and your dog to hike. In most areas of the National Forest dogs can be off leash if the owner can control the animal with voice commands.

There is a dog kennel in Yosemite Valley near the Horse Stables that is open in summer, information is available at www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/pets.html  but space is limited so plan ahead. There are details on pet restrictions at http://www.yosemiteresorts.us/visit/Dogs%20in%20Yosemite%20National... that update from time to time. Also, many gateway communities to our National Parks have pet day-care and boarding facilities that can be located through the various local Chamber of Commerce or even via local hotels and inns. At Hotel Charlotte in Groveland on Highway 120 to Yosemite, we have business cards for a couple local day-boarding options to help our guests, but again, advance planning is a must.
