West Malaysia, located on the Island on Borneo, is known for its diverse cultures. And, while the name “Borneo” may conjure up images of people living in a primitive manner the truth is that Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah, is a dynamic city with malls, highways, and even Burger Kings. Visitors who want to learn about the various and distinct ethnic groups found in Sabah state should book a tour to Mari Mari Cultural Village with the travel agent at the Hyatt Regency’s tour desk.
The cultural village, high in the hills in the rainforest, consists of five traditional homes. Each traditional house has its unique architectural style and was built by the descendants of the tribes they represent. Visitors are greeted by guides in traditional outfits and learn about some of the traditions. For example: try you luck with the blow pipe, learn how to make fire the traditional way, help prepare part of your lunch in a banana leaf cooked in a length of bamboo, try their rice wine, get a traditional tattoo, and more. One of the highlights of the tour is the visit to the Murut Longhouse. All visitors must go through a customary Welcome Ceremony before being allowed inside the longhouse. Do not be alarmed if you notice a few skulls (real ones) hanging on the ceiling, as the Muruts are one of the headhunters' tribes in Sabah, and these skulls are simply handed down from generation to generation. The Lansaran, a traditional trampoline-like floor, is built right inside the Murut Longhouse. The last stop is a cultural show of the traditional dances from the various groups. At the end of the tour enjoy a lunch that includes the bamboo portion you prepared earlier.
