My wife and I are heading to Cancun October 18th.  We are staying at an upscale well known branded hotel, but want to double check if Cancun is safe.  Are there issues going from the airport to hotels in cancun?  Can we walk around during the day?  Is going offsite for dinner safe?

Also, is Cancun on any hurricane path in late October.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you,

It is safe to visit Cancun, Mexico with your wife. But just like New York City there are some places where you should avoid going after dark especially alone. For more details visit your state department website.

As far as concern to Hurricane, in the region it is officially from June to October, though September and October are the most likely months. So check weather forecast too before leaving your home to Cancun.

Thank you.
It's too soon to predict hurricanes in October, but as Peter says, it is the season. Peter and Kristin are right about this being a pretty safe place. What you must remember is that Cancun is an entirely artificial construct, a barrier island that had nothing on it before the Mexican government decided to develop it as a hotel zone in the 1970s.

There are a lot of drug gangs near the U.S. border, but Cancun is far, far away from all that, separated from the mainland by water (and from the U.S. border by maybe one thousand miles). It's an idealized Mexico dedicated to serving North Americans who want to get some sun and tequila cocktails.
To all recent posts, the agreement is, it is safe to travel to Cancun & Riviera Maya. Just a word of warning to first timers visiting to the region, that you will see security to ALL hotels and resorts, and there are police & army checkpoints located in strategic positions around the city. Please DO NOT be fazed by this show of security measures. It's this form of policing that keeps Cancun & the Riviera Maya safe for all visitors.

I too have lived in Cancun for over 8 years (originally from the UK), and would treat the city like my own city back home. Be street wise and you will have nothing to be concerned about. Plus, make use of the tours available, there is so much history & culture to experience, you will not fit it all in, and you will be returning to Mexico for more.

Happy Holiday
